Question

Any advantage to 4x8GB over 2x16GB dimms?

Sep 13, 2017 12:28PM PDT

HI
I am building a pc and wondering if there is any negatives to choosing 4x8GB over 2x16GB dimms?

2x16GB is cheaper and takes up less spots for future upgrade but is it as accessible to the system as 4x8GB?

Quad Channel DDR 4. with optane ssd and an i9.

Any advice for dumb question much appreciated.

I doubt there's much advantage past 8 GB for current operating systems anyway.

Here's a downer for 4x.

The bus loading may shave some clocking timing (SLOWER!!!)

The pair wins this round. But a pair of 2x8GB is spot on for today's gamer. Unless you are going for more than say a 1080 gpu on UHD 4K.

Optane? If you are getting SSD, nope. That was covered in Linus tech tips.

It's your business why you want to go to 32GB.
I'd go with a 2x16GB setup.
Do some reading about that optane.....what it does and does not do.
