Question

Antivirus protection available for smartphones?

Sep 13, 2018 6:59PM PDT

I went to my local T-Mobile store today and had my LG K8 ( 2018 ) smartphone activated. Since this is my first smartphone and I have internet access on it should I install some type of security software on the smartphone like I have installed on my computers here at home?

For example do companies sell antivirus software which can be installed on a smartphone to protect it from being infected while using it out in public on a public WiFi network or while using it here at home on my home's WiFi network?

Re: FYI: AVG is now owned by Avast
Sep 25, 2018 4:00AM PDT

Since I've had Avast AV on both of my computers for several years and know how it works I installed the free version of Avast AV for Android devices on my phone. Is Avast AV all I need to install on my phone or should I install something else on the phone like SuperAntiSpyware if it's available in a free version for Android devices?

Can you tell me what annoying pop-up ads and articles you are seeing?

When you say "the old boards was good," how long ago are you talking about? We switched over to our new platform 3 years ago.

Let me know.

Thank you.

If you've been using the new format on your discussion board for more than 3 years now; why am I just seeing it now? I'm seeing ads from CSpire with huge images of the new iPhone; I'm seeing ads from Best Buy; I'm also seeing news articles from CNET. When I create a post at the bottom of the page on this Dell laptop I see the words "CANCEL" and "SUBMIT". I no longer see the word "EDIT" anywhere.

I need some clarification

My answers and questions inline to your questions and comments:

If you've been using the new format on your discussion board for more than 3 years now; why am I just seeing it now? I'm seeing ads from CSpire with huge images of the new iPhone; I'm seeing ads from Best Buy; I'm also seeing news articles from CNET.

We've always have ads in our forums for as long as they have existed, without them there would be no CNET or these forums. In the forums ads are located at the top and bottom and right of our forum pages--that hasn't changed. You mentioned "Pop up" ads in your earlier post which was what I was inquiring about what they were. Are we talking about pop-up ads or our ads overall? I just want to make sure we are both on the same page.

When I create a post at the bottom of the page on this Dell laptop I see the words "CANCEL" and "SUBMIT". I no longer see the word "EDIT" anywhere.

Do you not see the "PREVIEW POST" button to the left of the "SUBMIT POST" button?

When you are in the state of previewing your post you should see the "EDIT POST" button, clicking on that button when previewing your post will return you to the submission form so you can edit your post.

As for editing your post or topic after you submitted your post, hovering over your post will display a pencil icon which is the edit mode which will allow you to edit your post. Just remember you have only 24 hours from the time of submission to edit your post. Once that time expires, that pencil icon to edit your post will no longer appear.

Let me know if these explanation help.

The board seems to be working fine now; like the old board. The "preview post" button has now returned and all of those huge Best Buy type ads and CNET articles are now gone.

It's strange though as we haven't touched/changed anything, but glad that things are back to the norm for you.

Antivirus app list
Oct 1, 2018 3:29AM PDT

Any gadget that is connected to the internet is vulnerable to attacks from viruses, trojans, etc.
To protect your smartphone an anti-virus app is required. I believe your smartphone runs on Android. Some of the best antivirus for android are:
1) Bitdefender
2)Avira
3)Security master
4)AVG
Get your antivirus app from a verified source only. Their own websites can be a good source.

I went with Avast AV protection for Android devices; I installed the app directly from the Avast website. So far it seems to be working good. I've only added a few apps to the phone since I had it activated about two weeks ago with T-Mobile. A scan right now takes about 30 seconds; is that normal or should a scan take longer?

That sounds reasonable

30 seconds is in the ballpark
