AntiVirus & Firewall?

by gravyz / September 25, 2004 11:40 PM PDT

I've recently upgraded to XP from Me. I used "MS-XP Home Upgrade" software. I have problems getting online and staying online (cable). My isp blames both Norton antivirus & ZoneAlarm. He said both have a history of problems with XP. Has anyone else had this problem and can anyone recomend software. My isp offers for an additionl fee Mcafee antivirus & firewall.
Thanks

I have no problems with either, but some will block items they shouldn't with Zonealarm and as you may suspect the same issue will occur with other firewalls if the owner does the same "overblocking". Firewall support is not here or your ISP but from the firewall's support site.

As to the antivirus, the 2004 version is "panned" by many at 68% UNHAPPY. What more a clue that something is amiss do we need.

Here's what I use...

Free AVG from http://www.grisoft.com
Zone Alarm.

I don't have any issues, but tend to run a tight ship.

Both Norton and McAfee have their own set of issues with XP and other programs.

I'd go along with Bob's suggestion of AVG, and you might consider buying a cable modem/router that has a built-in firewall. It's not quite as easy to set up as ZoneAlarm or any of the others, but the security level it provides is considerably better. The Linksys or D-Link ones that tend to run around $100 are probably more than adequate. Might even be a good time to consider going wireless.

Hi,
I went through ur problem and i think the zone alarm is causing the problem. Do not unistall zonealarm service. Try this step and do mail me back.

1. Start->Run->services.msc and press OK
2. Services window is open
3. Search for ZONEALARM
4. Right Click on ZONEALARM and select the option STOP
This will stop the service of ZONEALARM
5. Restart the computer and try to connect to the internet

I'm running AVG antivirus and Zonealarm firewall with no problems. With my limited knowledge and experience, I would suspect the problem is your "Upgrade" version of XP. I've heard many complaints about it, and some folks say don't waste your time with that version. Maybe someone running the XP upgrade can post more info. on your problems.

I'm running trend micro's "PC-CILLIN" anti virus & firewall without problems. On my other drive I'm running AVG & Zone Alarm, both on win xp. no problems! One suggestion that I'm suprised no one else has mentioned. Did you shut off XP's firewall before using another? This would create some problems at times from getting to the net with cable. SKIP

Howdy gravyz,
Yes, I have had conflict with Zone Alarm and Nortons but it was mainly due to configuration conflicts and by trial and error, I fixed it. I have since uninstalled Nortons and gone back to NOD32 for antivirus as it is as secure as Nortons and none of the resource hogging and "permissions" and file sharing problems that Nortons created, let alone the time it took for Nortons to do its thing! I find NOD32 easy to configure and it works well with Zone Alarm Pro.Hope this helps.:)

The Samsung RF23M8090SG

One of the best French door fridges we've tested

A good-looking fridge with useful features like an auto-filling water pitcher and a temperature-adjustable "FlexZone" drawer. It was a near-flawless performer in our cooling tests.
