General discussion

AntiVirus companies dont support SSL

Mar 10, 2005 8:44AM PST

I have had a bad time lately sending and receiving email. My ISP, Sympatico.ca says the antivirus guys don't all support SSL. They include Norton, McAfee, AVG etc.
They say SSL is being used by all the big ISP's now and when all their clients are switched it will be havoc unleashed.
It sure has caused a problem for me.
Do you know of any antivirus app. that will support SSL ??
Thanks
Wayne

some grade 12 drop out is giving you a bad time...

i am on Telus in Vancouver BC, run an AV and am on ADSL.

I have NEVER changed my SSL settings.

in your browser go to Tools>Internet Options> Advanced and ensure you SSL 3.0 and SSL 2.0 is checked.

if you have a problem accesing your AV call your ISP and ask to speak to someone in authority etc etc.

This is interesting...

This has everyone baffled. I set my Accounts info properly and everything works. Then within hours the pop3 info changes to 120.0.0.1 Also it moves the pop info - smtphm.sympatico.ca, down onto the line that has my account name and also adds :995 which is the port number.
The last tech I talked to seemed to know "something" (for a change)and he said that was because of my antivirus apps. Obviously he was wrong.
I'd like to hear what AVG has to say about all this but so far they haven't replied to my message on their Forum.
Thanks

Same problem here!

Wayne,

While on the phone with Sympatico about the email slowdown, I was told they're going with the new email platform for all clients soon, so I switched to the SSL email. Now I can't send emails out at all, and was finally told I won't be able to, not from Outlook. My older incoming emails are trickling in and should return to normal. I have Norton Internet Security 2004 & now found out they don't support SSL. Sympatico should have told me this before I switched so I could research first & not be stuck. Once you go on the new platform, they say they can't switch you back. I was able to send out email from the new Sympatico-MSN web-based email page, but I don't want this as my main home email method. I have Outlook 2000 & Windows XP Pro, and prefer to use Outlook, not the webpage. I'm pretty angry & have spent hours on this for 2 days.

A friend in the computer business is getting back to me tomorrow & I'll pass on anything to you that might help. Have you switched to the new email platform? It's supposed to take up to the end of the year to completely switch all Sympatico clients, which is why I would have stayed with the old for now if I knew. I'd appreciate any ideas on SSL compatible internet security software if anyone knows of any.

Got it fixed
Apr 1, 2005 3:23AM PST

I phoned and asked for a manager at Sympatico & got a supervisor immediately. We went into Outlook/Tools/Accounts/Properties and changed these:

1. In Servers, we changed whatever was in there to SMTP.1.SYMPATICO.CA, and also unchecked "My server requires authentication" (on bottom in 'Outgoing Mail Server')
2. In Advanced, under Outgoing Mail, we unchecked 'This server requires a secure connection" (SSL). The port is 25. It's still checked in Incoming Mail, port 995.

I don't know if this means I'm off the new platform, but I can now send email from Outlook without getting the error message I was before. I also turned Email Scanning back on in Norton, at the suggestion of my own computer guy. So, I was given inaccurate info by Sympatico's grade 12 Wink tech person the other day. This may help those who were put ont the new platform with Norton and other AV software.

Glad to hear you got your problem solved.
I solved mine in a rather unique way !!
I switched to Rogers cable which is wayyyy better. It's slightly faster and has a lot more to offer. If you have their TV cable you can bundle the internet with it and it ends up cheaper than Sympatico.
Thanks for your input.
