"Antivirus 8" is blocking me from accessing Safe Mode

My stepfather was duped into downloading "Antivirus 8." Now his computer seems to be completely hijacked.

I've done some reading on removing this virus/spyware/malware (not sure which one this falls under) and found that I needed to get into "Safe Mode" to download removal software.

When I boot into Safe Mode, Antivirus 8 prompts me to "get a genuine version of Antivirus 8," as it does when I regularly boot my machine.

So now that my Safe Mode option is blocked, I have no idea where to go from here.

Running Windows 7 on a pretty new Dell. I don't have a ton of experience trying to fix computers but I like trying to fix things myself. Would rather avoid taking it in to be repaired. Thanks in advance!

getting rid of your virus

go to system restore,go to a date before you downloaded the virus, click that date & you should be rid of it

Thanks bluco!

It worked! I had to go through the "system restore with command prompt" and it seemed to do the trick.

So does this completely remove the malicious software? Or are their other steps I need to take at this point to ensure it's completely wiped out?

I would be panicking now if my safe mode was blocked. In windows 7 there is a "Repair Windows" solution that appears in safe mode.If you can see this click onto it,otherwise i'm plum out of any other ideas to get rid of this pop up.If I couldn't get rid of viruses I would reinstall windows and to heck with my lost files. You can always reinstall most of them through discs supplied from the programmes themselves or from keys that you presumably kept in a book. You should always write down passwords and keys so you can download them from the websites.Photos and other momento's you'll have to lose.A good idea is to back up anything you want to keep on a memory card like SD.ANOTHER TIP STUDY COMPUTERS!!

I thought you said your safe mode was blocked. You didn't explain your symptoms in detail. You must pay attention to detail in computers. You've learnt your lesson now downloading fake software.Welcome to the world of computers, headaches and "organ stops!!"
