Why not delete the quarantined items?

They get quarantined so that you can restore them if you find that Norton made an error when it removed them.

If they have been quarantined for a while and you are happy that there has been no ill-effect to your system, why not delete them from quarantine?

i think those type of viruses are the ones who restores themselves back again if you made the mistake of deleting them thats why the anti virus decided just to quarantine them.... been there before..

Generally not true

They are quarantined so that the user can 'restore' them in case the quarantine causes instability in the system.

There are viruses and other malware that re-propagate, and in those cases anti-virus utilities will fail to remove the threats. That's when we have to dig deep and use other methods to clean the system.

But if a virus has been quarantined and the system has been stable for a while, then deleting that will not cause that virus to reappear.

I Have The Same Problem Norton Quarantine
Oct 3, 2010 5:07AM PDT

I read this thread and other threads that pertain to quarantined items and I am still just as confused. Smh...I just received a brand new, shipped from Walmart, HP 210 Mini Netbook 210 w/Windows XP SP3 as a gift on Sept. 22, 2010. It came with Norton AV free for 60 days. Norton has just scanned and informed me that I have an infection of a heuristic virus (getmname.exe that contains Bloodhound.MalPe) and that the infection took place on Nov 2009 which is before this PC was even sold and that the infection has been quarantined. I don't want it quarantined. I googled it and all recommendations are to delete it immediately.

I have read several forums (including CNET) and so far no one has been able to tell me how to delete a file from Norton's quarantine. That is what I mainly want to know. Also I am getting rid of Norton and just like the person who started this discussion, I want to know if I delete Norton without deleting that infected file first, will the file become active again. Please do not just tell me to delete it unless you also tell me how to because Norton does not offer that option and that is one of the reasons I am dumping it(among others)for Avast. I am starting to get a bit frustrated so any good advice or help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
