Anti Spy ware

Oct 17, 2008 5:04AM PDT

Hello
Does Super Anti Spyware (free edition) do the same job as Windows Defender?

Should I use one or the other - or both on the same computer.
I run an XP and a Vista machine and would appreciate advice to protect both computers.

Thank you

Steve

Windows Defender detects and removes spyware

Windows Defender is software that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer. Windows Defender features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected, minimizes interruptions, and helps you stay productive.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is considered to be the next step in the detection and removal of malware. We compiled a number of new technologies that are designed to quickly detect, destroy, and prevent malware. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware can detect and remove malware that even the most well-known Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware applications on the market today cannot. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware monitors every process and stops malicious processes before they even start.

MY favourites are MBAM AND SAS Wink

As the free versions don't have "real time", you can have more than 1 Anti Malware scanner on your computer.

Thank you for your reply - very much appreciated.
May I ask another question regarding security. I have been running Norton Anti Virus for about 6 years on two XP computers. Recently I upgraded one computer to Vista - that's when the network file hanging began., Not even a Norton Tech ( who are very helpful ) could get my two computers working without network file hanging. I even turned off auto protect on both computers to transfer files and I still got hangs. Finally had to remove Norton from both computers. Now the computers run faster than I can believe and no hangs whatsoever.
Can I run without an Anti Virus providing I'm careful where I go on the Internet and not click on anything I don't know to be from a good source?

Many Thanks,

Steve

I would NOT recommend to have NO Anti Virus at all.

Why don't you have a look at:

ClamWin is a Free Antivirus program for Microsoft Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/2003 and Vista.

ClamWin Free Antivirus comes with an easy installer and open source code. You may download and use it absolutely free of charge. It features:

Then there is the Free Avast:

Hello Marianna,
I did as you advised - and I am very pleased at the results. I'm running Clam, Windows Defender, + Super Anti Spyware. I scanned both computers this morning - nothing detected. I've transferred files numerous times today from the XP to the Vista - without incident.

Many thanks for your expert knowledge,
Hoping Symantec would research this issue further,

Kind Regards,

Steve
