"You can also use Custom if your computer doesn't have an operating system , or if you want to set up a multiboot system on your computer."
I must say, that IS a bit confusing. I fail to see how you can run the .exe file without an operating system. I expect that you have to create a bootable DVD, and launch the executable from there. Just burning the files on a DVD will not get the job done. BTW, of the three files you listed, just run the Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe and everything is automated from there.
hi all, i know this has been asked many a time, i have read nearly all posts i can find on it but non answer the specifics of my issue.
the one difference is i purchased the win 7 upgrade discounted pack as im a student in the UK.
and in the FAQs it states,
You can also use Custom if your computer doesn't have an operating system , or if you want to set up a multiboot system on your computer.
when choosing the upgrade it asked if i wanted the 32 or 64 bit version. i picked the 64bit as i have an amd x64 CPU but my current OS is win XP 32bit.
after downloading the Win 7 package i firstly got 3 files.
Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64.exe
setup1.box
setup2.box
after running the exe file i get a new folder, named expandedsetup.
when running any of the files it says its not a valid win32 application.
i was under the impression i would be able to do a clean install like i always do when i install an OS on my system by booting from the DVD/CD drive with the install data on it.
but im guessing you have to run this software in your current OS then it reboots and starts the clean install.
but how is it possible to install on a machine that has no OS like i quoted in the start of my post.
im guessing to use this 64bit upgrade ineed a 64 bit OS first.
and i can only use the 32bit win 7 upgrade..
but i have also read you can upgrade from win xp 32bit to win 7 64bit.
to do so you must do a clean install. but how do i do that with the downloaded upgrade. i have burnt the data to a dvd and when i try to boot from it i get the NTLDR is missing instead of the press any key to boot from CD/DVD drive..
