Long story short... Installed SP2 and Battlefield wont launch anymore. I get a splash screen and it quits. Simple enough.

Hmmmm......what other games will not play.

I haven't played Battlefield 1942 in a long time, but just put it on and it plays fine.

I have dozens of games on my WinXP and so far none have given any problems with SP2.

Have you checked the CNet sponsored PC GamesSpot forum to see if others have had a problem with Battlefield. I really don't think anything is wrong playing Battlefield with SP2.

You can alwasy go to the control panel and delete SP2 under Add/Remove and see if that is the problem, then reinstall SP2 if not. Of course that takes a long time so I would suggest the GameSpot forum.

John! I was under the impression that SP2 can only be safely removed by using the method described in Microsoft Knowledge Based Article 875350.
Have you ever successfully removed SP2 through the Add Remove Programs Facility?

Well, thanks for mentioning MSKB 875350 and what it says:

(Note it says 'use any one of the following', then read the "Important We Recommend that you use the following ......the "appwiz.cpl" is the Add/Remove}

"Use any one of the following methods to remove Microsoft Windows XP SP2 from your computer:

Use the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel
Use the hidden $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder
Use the System Restore process
Use Recovery Console

Important We recommend that you use the following methods in the order that they are listed.

Use the Add or Remove Programs tool in Control Panel

Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
Click to select the Show Updates check box.
Click Windows XP Service Pack 2, and then click Remove.
Follow the instructions on the screen to remove Windows XP SP2."

Try uninstalling and re-installing Battlefield 1942, That should do the trick (There's no other reason I can see why it should not run on XP without a glitch - unless you've got a virus)
