Another McAfee Icon in the system tray being Black issue

by I.Q. / January 20, 2006 7:18 AM PST

I just finished reading the post "McAfee Icon in system tray Black" by IMGRATEFUL and the response by GRIF THOMAS. I have a similar issue and would like to know if the response from GRIF will resolve my problem.

I haven't had the "Black Icon" issue at startup, but rather after an automatic download occurs. Once the download has finished, the Icon goes Black and when I go to the security center, it's disabled. This is becoming a pain in the #*%! The first time it happened I didn't realize it and went almost two days before discovering it! I got lucky and had no problems (at least not that I'm aware of) because of this.

Any help with this will be appreciated in advance.

Thanks - I.Q.

My system:

Dell Dimension 4550
Version 5.1.2600
Windows XP (Home) w/SP2
Intel(R) Pentium(R)4 CPU 2.40GHz
512Mb Ram

McAfee Info:
Version 9.1
Build 9.1.0
Engine version 4.4.00
Dat version 4.0.4677

I.Q. Give It A Try...

The "black M" issue is common for Virus Scan 8, 9, and 10..Yes, please follow the instructions I gave earlier at the link below. It generally fixes your issue although I've got no guarantees here.:

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6122-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=151183&messageID=1683930

For some users with your specific problem, the solution is simply to reboot after the update..Originally, Virus Scan 9 only got weekly updates on Wednesday or Thursday..Is your's still the same? If so, simply remember to restart the computer on Thursday. If your system is now up to daily updates, (Virus Scan 10 has this now) you'll just need to watch for the update.

The issue can also be more pronounced if you've previously had a Norton product on the computer and didn't uninstall it completely.

Hope this helps.

Lekajun, Please Describe What You Did...

In reply to: have same trouble

Which version of the McAFee Internet Security Suite did you previously have? Which version of Virus Scan do you have now? (RIGHT click on the red "M" in the lower right corner, choose "Virus Scan", select "About". Give us the "build number", the "scan engined" number, and the "Virus defintions" number.)

Did you uninstall McAfee's Internet Security Suite BEFORE installing the new version? How did you uninstall it? (EACH separate program should be uninstalled from the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs section..Did you do that?)

And most importantly, did you follow the instructions in the link I provided earlier? Did it fix the problem?

Hope this helps and let us know more.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
