General discussion

Another IE vs other browsers question.

Jun 28, 2004 10:52PM PDT

I am getting ready to chuck this puter out the window!! I have the windows xp home edition. We have use IE for forever. Now I am beginnig to wonder if it's time to switch browsers. I don't know if this is a browser problem or my computer....please help me out. I log on, start surfing, and BOOM the big grey box pops ups telling me it needs to send an error report and end the program now. I hate this thing. It is happening CONSTANTLY and I can't do anything. Obviously, right now all is ok cause I am here....waiting for the bomb to drop!! THis has been happening just in the last 2 weeks. What is it? If it is the IE browser, what is the next best one to use? I have thought about downloading Netscape, but there is so much talk about Mozilla. I don't know anything about this one. And if it is better, is there a version that would work best for me? I have valued your help here and love reading these boards. Thanks for your help in advance.

Spin186, I do not have the answer but here is a suggestion. Mozilla 1.7 seems to be the hot browser of the day... why not download, try it, and see if the problem persists. No need to do anything with Internet Explorer... just leave it and use for Microsoft Updates. Uninstall Mozilla if problem is not resolved.

Just an idea! I am presently experimenting with Mozilla.

Best of luck,

Glenn

Thanks for your reply. I am thinking about doing just that. What do you think, Mr. Proffitt? You think it's an IE problem and to go elsewhere?

''Error report''.
Jun 29, 2004 4:00AM PDT
BOOM the big grey box pops ups telling me it needs to send an error report and end the program now.

1. Error Reporting that is enabled by default displays an error dialog box prompting the user to indicate whether or not they want to report the problem. When choosing to report the problem, technical information about the problem is collected and then sent to Microsoft over the Internet. If a report is rendered and if a similar problem has been reported by other people and more information is available, a link to that information will be provided the user. Turning it ON or turning it OFF is the user's call. For assistance and resolution, we need to know the WHY information.

a. Were there no links or anything else provided should you submit the report?

b. Please. For your benefit, always report the error information this report contains when wanting our analyses.

2. When a system error occurs, the computer displays a blue screen containing error codes and all computer operations stop. When an illegal operation or other error occurs in a program, that program stops working. System and program errors may be transmitted to Microsoft which allows them to track and address operating system, Windows component, and program errors. Error Reporting configuration is outlined in, [Q310414]:

a. Enable or disable
b. Enable for the operating system
c. Specify the program for which a report is generated
d. Remove programs from the list
e. Send an error report to Microsoft

Thank you.

BOOM. Move out of the line of fire.
Jun 29, 2004 4:02AM PDT

My advice is simple.

1. Move out of the line of fire between malware writers and Microsoft.

2. Be parasite free. Read http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/

3. After the pests are gone, consider IEFIX from http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFIX.htm

4. Use ANY other browser when you can. I use both Mozilla on the desktops and FireFox on the laptop with ease. Very little doesn't work.
