Annoying new hardware Wizard

by bte / August 23, 2004 2:05 PM PDT

I recently applied an firmware upate from Sony to my system for my DVD Drive running under Home XP. Since that time on every re boot I receive a message that the system has found new hardware - my DVD drive - and needs to reinstall it. Yet when I say re install it says it can't find the driver. I tried directing it to the appropriate file on the install disk with no success.
One response from the XP forum said to delete the Reg entries relating to the DVD and then it would be reinstalled. I have been hesitant to do this since I have some concern that since it cant find the driver now it will not find it if I delete the reg enteries, and the Drive seem to be working OK. The problem is the annoying appeareance of the wizard. Sony tells me to get the driver from its' web site but It's not there that I can find.
Any suggestions?

DVD reinstall

1. One response from the XP forum said to delete the Reg entries relating to the DVD and then it would be reinstalled. I have been hesitant to do this since I have some concern that since it cant find the driver now it will not find it if I delete the reg enteries, and the Drive seem to be working OK.

a. IMHO, your question here should be an answer there to the member who made the suggestion -- simple courtesy doing this when somebody attempts to help. Also since this is an XP question, that fourm would be the place to hang out as well, not this forum.

b. After reading the XP forum response, it is my opinion that it is correct.

2 Yet when I say re install it says it can't find the driver.

With no option whatsoever for you to point the wizard to where the driver is?

3. Sony tells me to get the driver from its' web site but It's not there that I can find.

a. If Sony said so, then it must be there. Ask them where.

b. Also ask why such a process written by them would not give a user the option for pointing the wizard to where the driver may exist so the install can finish (my #2).
