Resolved Question

Android Rugby Pro

May 27, 2014 7:23AM PDT

First off, the Android is a Samsung Rugby Pro (SGH-I547) running running v4.1.2, which I presume is Jellybean? Anyways, the version isn't my real question, the real questions are is the hardware failing and the phone dying a slow death, and if so, am I looking at a new phone in the near future?

The symptoms are as follows:

-screen flashes (1/4 second?) a 'dusty' shade of orange often, with or without apps running, often on a random basis

-apps such as youtube, gmail, firefox, and even idle with task manager are making the phone quite toasty and the CPU says something like 40-50 and it's cut off in the task manager. this happens randomly, on a good day only 3-5 times, bad day, every time an app is opened.

-the battery feels hot, even though I have a brand new replacement.

-the phone turns on and off roughly the same time as my backup phone (which had no cameras physically installed to the board)

-the RAM runs perfectly fine, usually at around 300mb-400mb. it is never full because I have very few apps on my phone.

-RAM does spike up to max when the CPU is also at max. phone still seems to operate without input lag after the app is closed or restarted.

-phone has been dropped about 5' at 20mph when falling off my bicycle on way to college.

-highly doubtful, but the electromagnetic fields from welding MAY have done something? (still doubt it)

-charging from about 10-15% battery to 100% or near 100% only takes 30-45 minutes. OEM charger, not sure if this is normal or not.

Those are the reasons I'm suspecting some kind of hardware is at fault.

The only page is the home page, when trying to view other home pages, it just rocks back and forth. That is on purpose as I only have these apps up and about.
Weather (takes up the top half of screen), gmail, backgammon, youtube, messaging, alarm clock plus, camera, my files, and memo. On the bottom part of the screen there is contacts, firefox, and apps. In the apps, everything is completely hidden.

I've disabled some services, and think myself to be a little tech savvy, however please inform me if any of the disabled apps would be causing this.

Disabled Stuffs: all of AT&T's garbage, any app not on the list above has been disabled, even calculator, calendar, themes, animated backgrounds, stuff like that. I've googled before disabling and made sure it was 'safe' to disable.

GPS, bluetooth, driving mode, sync, and airplane are all turned off, the rest is turned on.

So far, no issues with the phone until this started up about a few months ago.

Am I looking at a new phone in the near future or is this something I can fix? If the phone does need to be replaced, what are some durable phones, similar to the Rugby Pro? (preferably similar specs, I dont use it to do very much)

Thank you very much to anyone stopping by who took time to read all of this essay...

Did you try a full reset?
May 27, 2014 7:35AM PDT

I usually see android devices that a full reset to factory tosses out all the stuff and it usually returns to the same performance as it was out of the box. If not, you hope it's under warranty as there are no user serviceable parts.

what if...
May 27, 2014 7:52AM PDT

I were to keep the screen from one, and just swap the board out with the other that I first had?
At one point in life I needed two separate phones and numbers, and the other is just sitting around. That's how the spare came about. The only issue on the spare is the touch wasn't really calibrated correctly, so hopefully the board isn't part of that. An example is typing 'hello', might look something like 'gwkki.'

Honestly not sure if it's under warranty, had both nearly two years now. It's had its fair share of slight abuse of occasional drops and stumbles here and there. Oh and did I mention it's actually waterproof? Accidentally went swimming for nearly an hour with it in my velcro side pocket the entire time.

Sure, you can try that but if you did phone repair on any regular basis you would know that no one would guarantee the results. Nice idea but I rarely see anyone successfully repair a phone today. The ones that do are pretty well seasoned. But hey, why not try it?

phone died
May 31, 2014 4:45AM PDT

This morning I went to turn my phone on, and found out it died. Are there similar phones like the Rugby Pro? It was running 4.1.2 and the older Rugby Pro only ran 4.0.x, so I sold it. Price isn't much of an issue. Or would you suggest I get an otterbox for a slightly higher-end smartphone? As far as I know otterbox claims it's drop proof, but so was the Rugby Pro. Thanks and sorry for bring the thread back from the dead.

Drop proof? I don't believe it.

Do that help? Yes. As to similar, hit the web, stores and such.

what about this phone?

Heard nothing but good reviews of the Galaxy S4. Found a 16GB one for just a benjamin. Not a bad deal.
Does it take the microSD cards like the Rugby Pro? Sorry about the obvious question but I'm still relatively new to this whole smartphone world. Entered it only 18 months ago from a Nokia 6030 that I'd had for years, was a huge void to fill.

As for the Rugby Pro, its a real trooper. Took this bad boy to the gym and dropped a 110LB dumbbell directly on the back of it, and another time a 70LB dumbbell's corner directly in the middle of the screen without a mark. It was rubber padded, but still very heavy, that's why I'm claiming the Rugby Pro drop proof. Highly doubt most people who go to a gym are powerlifters, let alone able to do many sets/reps with that kind of weight. Since the 2nd incident I've never taken my phone through any gym's front doors, and plan to never take any phone again through the doors of a gym.

"Does it take the microSD cards like the Rugby Pro?"

When sellers and makers don't answer questions you know it's the wrong seller or maker. It's a bad sign!
