Rooting will lose your mobile phone warranty and can't say whether your mobile will be totally compatible with the new android update.

You can root you phone.
Let me give you a piece of advice on rooting your xperia
-if you want to root use google"cfroot for xperia ray" and ul get a .zip file with the same name of 11.22 mb.
-download odin v3.07 or any version of odin (it is the samsung's software flashing tool for its devices)
-turn off your phone.
-hold volume down +power button and get into download mode.
-Open odin on windows and and wait til an indication of detection of ur tab is shown
-then unzip the cfroot.zip file and ull get a .tar file.
-in odin, click on pda and select the file u extracted and then start the flashing process.
Once done, it will reboot you device.

I have rooted several Android devices and based on my experience its rather easy to do so..

You can find rooting tutorials from either xda-developers or Playfuldroid.

Just follow the tutorials closely and nothing will goes wrong!
