Android phone not connecting to LG smart TV?

I have been trying to cast my OnePlus5t to my TV using he smart share feature. Although my phone appears under available devices on the TV, after I press accept on my phone to connect to the TV nothing changes on my phone. It does not say that any devices are connected and I don't have the option to cast. although it does read that my phone is connected on the TV I don't have the option to do anything. Can anyone help?

Let me share the top 2 reasons I encounter.

But I do have ideas why this fails. The most common reasons I run into is either it doesn't work (you have to ask LG) or the firewall in the router is blocking it.
