Question

Android MiniPCs?

Sep 3, 2013 7:26AM PDT

Can CNET please review a few of the more prominent android miniPCs such as the Tronsmart MK908 or the Minix Neo X7?

These would seem like a great alternative to the Chromecast or even a Roku 3.

Thanks!

Answer
I have the X5.

And while interesting I think I need to install Linux on it to make it useful.

Are you aware it arrives with what appears to be spyware? I will not enter into a debate but it's not a clean Android system and it would be a little scary if that was badware there.

It is not a great alternative to the units you listed. Maybe with Linux it would be but frankly for the dollar, you should avoid it unless you can get it with Linux.

That's where I discovered the possible spyware issue. You have to wonder what these machines are arriving with. LG and others are finding new ways to get the spyware out there.

As we all know, behind Android is Linux. So any Android box has Linux pre-installed.

Android is an operating system based on the Linux kernel with a user interface so we get it all.
