And the verdict is...

Dell...

In the end, I went with the Dell. I feel I got a great deal and I just like buying from Dell. You do have to work at it though.

Here's what I ended up with:
- Dell 8300 with P4 HT 3.0 Ghz w/800 Mhz FSB
- 1 GB RAM at 400 Mhz
- 120 GB Serial ATA HD at 7200 RPM
- Dual drives: 16x DVD-ROM and 8x DVD+R/RW/CD-RW
- 128MB GeForce FX 5200 graphics card
- Sound Blaster Live 5.1 sound card

All for $849 plus shipping, though I got a $50 rebate for part of the shipping.

I will still need to add a PCI FireWire (IEEE-1394) card, but that's only about $20-25.

I'm happy with it.

Thanks for all the input and comments.

Walt

The HT is nice. Even Linux uses it well. My PCI Firewire was under 20 with a cable!

Err...Walt, you must have talked to the great white cohona yesterday. I've been wanting to purchase the 8300 this summer and have been checking Dell almost every week. You must have gotten the all time best price I have heard of for $848 on the 8300 with the components you indicate. Today that same is $1050 after the $150 mail in rebate.

I know re today's price...I ran the config earlier to see.

The price on this dropped about $200 from Monday to Tuesday night/Weds. I was running configs constantly from Sunday night on.

Can you negotiate with Dell?
Aug 6, 2004 2:44PM PDT

Sorry to bring back a dead topic, but how the hell did you get such a good deal? Did you negotiate or bargain with Dell?

You got ripped off!!

What a ****** deal! You got ripped! I payed $750 for an Althon 64 3400+, and that outperforms the P4 3.0gh in every benchmark. I also got a much better videocard than you. I hope you learned your lesson. Dell is a monopolizing force that takes advantage of people who don't know squat about pc prices.

Did you notice

The original message is from February of this year. A lot has happened in the PC world from then until now. Besides, he said he was happy. Isn't that important too?

Yes, I noticed the date. The fact that I was on page ten when I noticed it gave that away. Anyway, he still got ripped off. Even back then he still could have gotten more bang for his buck. I'm not trying to hurt is feelings, but I want to point it out to him so he won't make the mistake next time.
