General discussion

And so goes the war on drugs, regardless of who gets hurt...

Nov 12, 2003 5:40PM PST

In Goose Creek, SC, students were handcuffed and forced at gun-point to the ground during a guerilla style raid determined to discover drugs at a local high-school. The whole incident was caught on tape and televised nationally, clearly showing the violent assault against mainly black students of this predominantly middle class high school campus...

Although several of the students were thrown to the ground against their will at gun-point, No Drugs were discovered or recovered inside or outside of the complex. No apologies were ever provided to the assaulted students. Unfortunately, one student was suspended for 3 days because he jumped at the bark of a drug dog...

Are we still living in a "Free" and "Democratic" society? Does "innocent" until proven guilty mean anything in the US anymore???

Re: Does
Nov 12, 2003 6:41PM PST

it does if you read the article......

but of course you picked the 'juicy bit' to post....

# Others, including some students and the school principal, say the Nov. 5 sweep was necessary to combat a growing drug problem at the school.#

#But two arrests for drug distribution have been made at the school so far this academic year. And while no drugs were found during the raid, a dog reacted to narcotics residue in some book bags.
Monique Gonzalez, a senior at the school, says she saw students during the raid running from campus, dumping drugs along the way.

"There were kids throwing pills and things in the bushes. People were taking bags out and throwing them on the ground," said Gonzalez, who was at a shopping center less than 200 yards from the school during the raid.

Principal George McCrackin has said he asked police to come to the school to curb an "influx of drug activity."

"I think it was awesome," said Kristal Totolo, one of about 2,600 students who was not in the hallway during the raid. "I feel 10 times safer knowing that the principal cares about it. He's not letting it go."

Robin Stout says she is among the small group of parents who support the principal 100 percent. Stout believes drug use has increased at the school from the time her son graduated in 1997 to this year when her daughter began ninth grade.

"If I was going to place blame, it would have to be on the kids that have been bringing drugs to school," Stout said. "I wouldn't blame the school. I wouldn't blame the police department."#

and then this....

#the state NAACP chapter said in a news release. "There was no reported effort to search arriving personal vehicles, the predominant mode of transportation for white students."

sheesh!!! are we supposed to think "those poor coloreds, must be cramped in the back of the bus"?? and this in an area that is #nestled among trees near the end of a winding road lined with upscale homes# a town where the median family income is $45,919 - well above the state median of $37,082#

That principle would have done better if...
Nov 13, 2003 2:11PM PST

...he had made a personal list of those suspected of any drug activity in the school based on his own personal knowledge, that of trusted teachers, and maybe some trusted students. Given that to the police and a low key approach of having a dean step into a room and call each in turn from class, then be escorted in the hallway with an officer in addition to the office area or wherever they would gather them, done the search of the lockers and any other search legally permissable. The police need to remember, "do no harm".

Sorry, Jonah, but I'm with Blake on this one.

Whether some kids are willing to trade liberty for "security," this is an egregious example of police state tactics (in this case, literally). The principal and the commanding police officer should both be fired, if not jailed.

Hi, Jonah.

Didn't need to read the article -- have seen the tapes on TV and read previous articles on the topic. I'm a certified "newsaholic," according to my wife.

Hi, Jonah.

Blake's opinion is irrelevant to the discussion of whether the police tactics were justified. Under American law, they were not -- it's that simple!

"isn't the discussion here about blakes initial post and his twisting the facts as stated in the article he linked to?" - jonah jones

No. It is about the police's exaggerated violence toward young kids. They though they would find drugs and didn't even find NyQuil. That is what the discussion is about. So forget about Blake's interpretation/quotation or whatever you want to call it, of the article and focus on the cops job in this case. Was it justified or not?

so now look at the initial post and the facts as stated by blake and compare them to the article he linked to...

my only argument here is not whether the police/school/parents were right or not, but blakes regular, tedious use of a corkscrew in a majority of his posts...

he said "it's time for me to bury the hatchet"....i say "it's time for him to stop grinding his"....

Maybe it's the approach, you think? You could try something like:

"Blake my good friend, that's an interesting post, however, I have to differ with you on a couple of the points you make. They don't seem to match up with the link your provided. Just where did you get your information?"

And then he says, and then you say and .... You know, a right nice friendly discussion that actually gets some information passed back and forth.

BTW, it's not necessary that you say 'my good friend'. I just thought it sounded nice.

I saw a kid literally slammed into a locker and pulled to the floor. How would you feel if that was your child? How would he or she feel? What if one of those guns had gone off and killed a child? What if that child had been yours?

I don't object to a drug searches persay but there are better ways. Maybe a lock down and search when all kids are in class. And no drawn guns!

forget what you saw on TV, and relate strictly to the post, and the article it linked to.... - jonah jones

Do you really expect everyone to ignore and forget all the evidence available of this event? Would you prefer that we forget that NO DRUGS were found in this guerilla style raid? Would you prefer that everyone forget that NO ONE was arrested for possessing any form of drugs, not even aspirin? Would you prefer that we forget that we have Constitutional Protections of our Civil Liberties that are supposed to protect every man, woman, and child in this country from over-reaching and over-bearing governments? Perhaps this concept is confusing and foreign to some since it doesn't work that way in many countries. Sadly, this concept is slowly eroding here in the US as well...

not Missing the point at all....maybe you are? - jonah jones

It appears that you have missed the point jonah. It seems that due to personal bias against select fellow members in this forum, you prefer to ignore important evidence in favor of confrontation. Perhaps it's time to bury your hatchet...

Is it your assertion that Ashcroft ordered this raid on that school? - James Denison

It is very possible that JA is behind these assaults. JA recently toured the US and held closed door meetings with law enforcement officers. Since these meetings were closed-door, it's impossible to know what was discussed unless it is leaked...

JA's views are extremely right of center. Because of his views, JA couldn't even defeat a dead man in Missouri's Senate race. It was a mistake for GW to appoint JA to such an important and powerful position in his administration and I think GW realizes it now...

JA has attempted to prevent Oregon's assisted suicide laws that had been voted on and passed twice by Oregon's citizens. JA has tried to use his power to override California's marijuana laws. JA continues to try to use his authority to impose his radical views on our country. So it wouldn't be surprising to learn that JA is directly or indirectly responsible for these guerilla style raids on High School students...
