Analog to Digital Video Transfer

Sep 26, 2006 4:54AM PDT

2 questions.....

First....What is the general feeling bout the best box for transferring old analog home videos to digital format (both from the camera or a VCR)?

Second....I have Roxio 7, a P4 (CPU 3.6 and 2 Gig of memory) and lots of disc space.

I finally figured out how to get the video from my JVC camera to the PC, but then it comes out in a WMF format.

When I tried to get Roxio to convert and burn to a DVD that would play on my living room player, it took forever, and then all I got was 2 hours of "splash-screen."

Any thoughts on what completely obvious step I'm missing? I am not exactly a newbie; however, when it comes to Video and editing, I am.

Thanx.

1. You need a digitizer.

Something like http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=AVC-1400&cat=CON is a cheap easy solution.

2. About that transfer. WMV is proprietary. I'd just connect with firewire, use WINDV (google.com or ask.com) and bingo I have any format I want.

Yes it takes hours to process the video.

Which component did you use

I assume you meant WMV format? What tool did you use to capture the video? Can you play back the video in Windows Media Player?

Which component in Creator 7 did you use to try to burn the video to DVD?

Assuming that it is a valid WMV file, you can burn it to DVD using Disc Copier in Creator 7. Did you try that?

Thanx From Video newbie.

Told you I was a video klutz.....the idea of doing editing is even more daunting.

It was WMV and Roxio wouldn't import to the computer, I had to use something called Image Mixer (V1.7) which came with my camera. Once I got it on the computer, I was able to play with no problems.

I used the Create a new DVD tab.....and it took an exceptionally long time to burn; but then, as I mentioned, all I got was 2 hours of splash screen.

My DVD player is a Tivo Humax DVR and I have to believe that I'm missing something somewhere....would like to make some DVDs of old analog stuff (as well as new digital files) to provide to relatives (that don't have a computer).

Thanx for taking the time to respond.

Try Disc Copier
Sep 27, 2006 7:29PM PDT

I suggest the following:
1. Does the WMV video that you captured play in Windows Media Player? If not, it is probably an invalid WMV file.

2. Which Roxio module did you use to try to import? What happened?

3. If it plays in Windows Media Player, try using the 'Disc Copier' application in Creator. This has a mode for converting WMV to DVD.

4. Have you tried the Roxio forums on the Roxio website? You can get feedback from lots of users who may be able to help you solve the problem. Be sure to include information about which camcorder you are using, and your system configuration.
