Analog to digital pass-through using Sony camcorder HC46/96

May 12, 2006 10:43AM PDT

Sony digital camcorders HC46 and HC96 can convert analog to digital by connecting an 8mm analog camcorder to the Sony digital camcorder and output using firewire to a pc. Editing can then be done and burn a dvd.

Has anyone done this successfully? Is the quality from the dvd as good as connecting the 8mm analog camcorder directly to a tv?

This would help me decide on buying a new digital camcorder and convert all my Hi8 tapes to dvd.

Thanks,
Brad

AV to digital passthrough

To do this you must have analog signal connected to analog input/output connectors on you camcorder, and the firewire connector form camcorder to your computer with an appropriate video capture program running. Next, your camcorder should be in the "play/edit" mode, and lastly you should have passthrough function enabled in the menu selections as follows:

On the LCD screen, touch P-MENU->[MENU]->[STANDARD SET]->[AV->DV OUT]->[ON]->OK.

This last step is crucial and often overlooked.
