Analog to digital audio converter - do they work?

Hello,
I have a Sony Wega - older model with only RCA audio hook -up.
My receiver has toslink or coaxil. Would using a box such as one made by Geften from my TV to receiver give me better sound ei. 5.1 when watching TV? DVD is fine. But there is no sound from my center speaker even when the program such as HBO is broadcasting in 5.1.
I'm aware that certain stations do not broadcast in surround sound.
I have Dish Network but the receiver doesn't have digital hook up either only analog. Thank you.

you need components w/ digital outputs

Unfortunately you need one your devices to provide the correct outputs. How about requesting an upgraded satellite box(?)
