Analog Input for Handycam for VHS to Digital

Mar 22, 2009 1:35AM PDT

I'm considering buying a new HD Sony Handycam, its between the HDR-XR200V or HDR-XR500V. I had a Handycam a few years back that could accept analog input so I could transfer VHS to MiniDV, unfortunately I no longer have this camera. I understand that the new cameras don't have this feature built in, is there anyway to input video, through an accessory or something like that? Analog or HDMI input would work (I have a Sony DVD/VHS player that upscales both to HDMI).

Also I have a lot of VHS videos I'd like to put on my computer, am I better off just buying an old MiniDV or Digital8 camera with analog inputs on eBay and then uploading them to my computer, or would you suggest some software/hardware package (I'm a Mac user)? I haven't read too many good things about a lot of these devices and for as expensive as they are I figure I might as well just buy an old camera and re-sell it when I'm done. Thanks.

I cheated.

I bought a 55 buck DVD RECORDER and let it digitize the tapes there. There are many DVD rippers so I get it done without any big expense and certainly don't need to babysit a computer during the capture step.

I'm happy.
