An HD problem..........

Feb 4, 2006 2:03PM PST

I just verified my HD, and it said that it needed repair. Here's the log:

Feb 5 00:56:40: Disk Utility started.

Verifying volume ?Macintosh HD?
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Illegal name
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking multi-linked files.
,0)
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

Disk Utility stopped verifying ?Macintosh HD? because the following error was encountered:

The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair

So, the button is grey and I can't repair it. Everything seems to be working fine, surprisingly. Any ideas? I'm running Mac OS X Tiger 10.44, on a Mac Mini. Thanks.

You need Disk Warrior

The disk utility in OS X is ok at fixing small things but when it comes time for the big guys you need to have Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro. (in that order)
What you are looking at is directory damage and the absolute best tool to fix that is DW. That is its sole aim in life, its reason for being. It repairs directory damage.

www.alsoft.com will set you on the right track to buy or your favorite on-line catalog store.

Thank you!

Too bad there isn't a free version. Anyway, I'll be sure to get it when I have the cash. Thanks again.

P.S.

Do I need both, or will DW suffice?

If it comes to a choice

then Disk Warrior should be your first purchase.

TechTool Pro when you have the extra cash

Alrighty......

just out of curiousity, I booted up from my install CD, and used disk utility to repair the disk. It passed verification just now. I should probably still buy DW and TT, right?

Just the DW

will do for you.
Booting from the CD, and running Disk Utility, will "sometimes" fix a disk but the utility itself is very low tech and simple.

DW rules

By the way...

Just in case, and while things are working,

Are your back-ups up to date?

When disks go wrong, and disk utility "fixes" them, most times all is well. Sometimes it may come to pass that disk utility just covered up the problem,

I've seen the error message you described. I "fixed it". The drive mounted.

I wish I had done a file back-up at that, the earliest moment.

Just a thought from experience.

same problem

I go the same message on a new laptop......nothing should be wrong, as it is only a few weeks old.

And you have done
Feb 20, 2006 3:39AM PST

all of the things that were suggested?
Or, you have called Apple to report it and for Technical Support under warranty?
