American Camcorder in Asia - Power Adapter issues?

Apr 10, 2006 5:07AM PDT

Hi

My Problem:
Bought Sony DCR HC46 from USA. It has Type-A electric plug. I'll gift it to my parents in India. They have Type-D electric plug.

Possible solution:
Use adapter plug

Question:
I googled around, and came to know that American domestic electric supply comes at 110Volts, whereas in India it's 220 Volts.

If I use the adapter plug, won't the extra voltage damage the camcorder? I have the same question for many electronics items I'm taking for my parents.

Thanks!

Look at the adapter.

Many will be rated at 100 to 240 VAC and 50 to 60 Hz. Since I can't see your adapter, I can't read it.

power adaptor vs transformer

You need a transformer that converts 220 v to 110 v. You can get them at any Radio Shack. Get one rated for the current you need (should be minimal for a camcorer charger). Do not get one designed for heating devices. True transformers are heavy. Of course you will also need adaptors to allowing plugging in. Do NOT plug your camcorder charger directly into 220v through an adaptor!
