America?s Has-Been Economy

By Paul Craig Roberts

A country cannot be a superpower without a high tech economy, and America?s high tech economy is eroding as I write.

The erosion began when US corporations outsourced manufacturing. Today many US companies are little more than a brand name selling goods made in Asia.

I fit in the category above. Sometimes priority goes array spending to much time in pursuit of the almighty dollar or the next step on the ladder to the top.

Islamic suicide bombers don't attack America because we are wealthy and powerful, rather, they do it because they are opposed to our Middle East policy where they feel their national sovereigny is being infringed upon by us. Also, things like economic sactions and supplying Israel with money and weapons to give them an advantage in the fight between them and Palestine. Whether what the American government is doing is righit or wrong, this is the real reason they attack America. It is not because "they hate our freedoms."

Apr 15, 2005 8:56AM PDT

The very fact that the Iraqi people themselves want a democratic government argues that fact heavily....and other Muslim/Islamic countries are following suit.

As for economic sanctions being a reason, that's ridiculous....look where sanctions got Saddam. He was still making billions and starving, killing, torturing his own people and keeping them living in subhuman conditions.

The majority of Iraqi's were opposed to Bush's invasion, as was the majority of the Islamic world.

So, perhaps Bush was right, or wrong, to invade Iraq, but my only point is that Muslim suicide bombers attack America not because "they hate our freedoms," but because of our foreign policy in the Middle East, whether right or wrong.

>>>>The majority of Iraqi's were opposed to Bush's invasion>>>>> is assinine to even try to get away with saying it.

The majority of Iraqi's weren't even allowed to voice an opinion one way or the other under Saddam's rule over ANYTHING that went on in that country.

If you truly believe that the people, now for the most part, able to actually speak out loud without retribution, aren't happy we're there, then you are more misinformed that I thought you were when you first got to this forum.

And there are more Muslim/Islamic countries today expressing a desire for free elections than ever before in history. We aren't imposing our beliefs on them...and they had to see what was happening in Iraq in order to finally 'get it'.

The suicide bombers aren't targeting American's exclusively anymore, either..........the majority of the time, they are killing their own, just like they always did.

The only people, if you want to call them that, who oppose anything are the terrorists and insurgents because if democracy under Muslim/Islamic control in Iraq can happen and actually work there, the terrorists lose their control. And their control has always been fear, intimidation, torture, and death to all who deny them. And they are losing.......and if they lose in Iraq, they lose everywhere else. That's a pretty hard pill to swallow for thugs who aren't use to losing anything, anywhere they take up shop.

Hi again Asian American,

First, I will replace your quoted statement ?Islamic Suicide Bomber? with ?MUSLIM SUICIDAL TERRORIST? if you don?t mind.

Why? Islam rejects all forms and types of Suicide. It is strictly prohibited in both legislative sources of the Islamic Law called ?The Shar?iah? (Qur?an and the Sunnah) and violates the principles of Jihad. And of course, another Muslim will debate against my statement. So to use the prefix Islamic would be improper (IMO). The word Muslim indicates that they are the followers of the Islamic faith. And like any other major religions, Islam is also divided into countless sects (denominations) and offshoots from these sects are again countless organized groups. What I am basically trying to say here, each of these sect and groups has their own POV to push their ?We are the Authentic Islamic Believers? constantly arguing and debating each other ?None Stop?. To give you an example of a recent popular thread called, ?Faith and Work?, the Christian perspective, the differences in the manner of theological understanding can also be seen from among the Muslims ? a big time issue.

Back to your entire comment on reasons why the Muslim Suicidal Terrorist attacks America is an opinion I have heard many times before and I have to add a yes that they also do hate the kind of Freedom that not only America enjoys but the Western way of life in general. Just because of these reasons, it is absolutely WRONG TO ATTACK America and other countries where bombs have detonated and have caused the deaths of many innocent lives. Again, I repeat, Religions or None, these kinds of atrocities against humanity is WRONG and the cycle of violence continue to get worst with the concept, ?An eye for an eye? --- ?It can?t be help, we must? --- and more countless reasons added to justify any ?Agenda?.

Hi CL
Apr 16, 2005 6:15AM PDT

I often wondered about Islamic/Muslim interchangeability. Thanks for posting that.

Am I understanding correctly that it's similar to Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodists, et al all falling under the "Protestant" banner, that different sects (Sunnis, etc.) fall under the banner "Muslim"?

The main groupings then being "Christian" or "Islam"?

OK, but ...
Apr 16, 2005 9:00AM PDT

... Christian practices/believes the basic tenets of Christianity (Bible, Jesus as Son of God, etc.). Various sects differ in various ways regarding interpretations and dogma, but that's a basic common theme. Does not a Muslim practice/believe the basic tenets of Islam (Q'uran, Muhammed, etc.) though the various sects interpret the details differently?

I believe this is why the term Islamist is used to describe the terrorists. It is only by a rabid distortion of ideology that one kills for Allah (I hope!), and it is only by a rabid distortion of ideology that even the most ardent of fundamentalists can get their head around bombing an abortion clinic.

Let me first state the basic tenets of Islam.

A. The Five Pillars of Islam
and
B. Known as the Pillars of Faith

You can browse through the site if you would to read other stuff. http://www.islam-guide.com/ This site I find very basic - which is good introduction to understanding Islam.

Now to answer your question, do Muslim believe and practice what I mentioned above? NO

Some sect do not believe in praying 5 times a day nor fasting in the month of Ramadhan. Some do not believe the Prophet's (pbup) is required. Some just take the Quran and that's it and gazillions others issues that each sects don't agree about. That's the reality of it.

I believe this is why the term Islamist is used to describe the terrorists. It is only by a rabid distortion of ideology that one kills for Allah (I hope!), and it is only by a rabid distortion of ideology that even the most ardent of fundamentalists can get their head around bombing an abortion clinic.

I don't know exactly where that term Islamist originated but reviewing what it meant the does tone does not sound appealing to me and brings about bad connotation. If a Muslim is a terrorist then he is a terrorist and should be called a terrorist. And some of them are proud to even be called a Muslim Terrorist. I've seen this many times in Islamic forums. In any case, some believe this to be an ideology which Bin Laden propagate. Sad

I notice that the site. is a blog, and asks for money
Apr 15, 2005 5:40AM PDT

... both on the site and on his organization page.

It champions the opinions of Peter Brimley.

He cites the threats as: mass immigration, multiculturalism, multilingualism, and affirmative action on the "organization he leads. The title "Center for American Unity" is an oxymoron.

Most of us are concerned about illegal immigration, but he goes beyond that. Affirmative action has thoughtful supporters and detractors, but his including it in his list of "threats" suggests personal prejudice.

I've heard the clarion call, "America for Americans" before. I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now.

Money for Bandwidth and other costs
Apr 15, 2005 8:36AM PDT

Yes, Vdare.com asks for donations because it is a non-commercial site that is very busy and bandwidth costs, among other costs, are high. News sources like CNN and Fox News don't operate without any costs, rather, they are profit making companies and their costs are covered by payment from companies for advertising and similar things.

'Donations" are tax deductible....
Apr 15, 2005 8:44AM PDT

as it is an "non-profit" organization.

So was "The PTL Club".

No doubt it is a busy, busy place.

Lots of people share and accept such views as his.

I don't know anything about PTL, but I would not believe Vdare.com was invalid if there were indeed some coinciding ideas. It's the ideas themselves I am interested in, not who supports them (or at least this is what I strive for).

In order to have credibility
Apr 15, 2005 9:31PM PDT

the ideas themselves have to be supported by credible supporters......otherwise they are only conspiracy-believers putting out irrational, and unreasonable and unsupported theories. And you get credibility by being supported by well-known and respected sources, not by begging for donations from people who buy into the irrational just because they are susceptible to not thinking clearly for themselves and see a con job when it's right in front of them. There are some who reject everything and disbelieve everything that is presented to them, even with facts to back them up, and feed on conspiracy theories instead because they see conspiracies behind everything......and that is the seed that begins terrorism in the minds and hearts of the insecure everywhere. That is the common ground/glue that holds them together and it all ends up badly.

Glenda, only those not paying attention don't realize
Apr 17, 2005 8:41AM PDT

that there's a major danger America's best days are behind her. We're very closely following the path that Britain took after WWII, including seeing ther currency replaced as the world's "reserve currency" and sharply devalued. Our currency is off about 45% against the Euro in the past five years -- that's not "america-bashing," that's an objective assessment of how we're doing economically so far this century, and the answer is "not very well." To solve a problem, you first have to admit that it exists, rather than being so tied up in patriotic fervor that you continue to proclaim "I am the greatest" without noticing that you;re on the road to being another has-been.

There are others saying the same thing as the one Sancho links to, without the anti-American bias -- there are links to those on the board too, here and here.
