AMD processor x64 -146

Nov 7, 2005 4:40AM PST

Iam thinking to buy one sun solaris(UNIX) server for my educational purpose, when i went to www.sun.com,there it's saying AMD x-64 processors are compatible with solaris,Linux and windows. There they are saying the AMD model no 146,148... but no where i find how much process speed does model 146 contains. In pentium4 we say the processor speed is 2.8ghz or 3.0 ghz like that...Can anyone let me...i Will be really greatfull to them...

And one more thing is how reliable are these AMD processor when compared to Sun UltraSPARC-IIi Processor.Price is a factor for me to buy UltraSPARC-IIi Processor, but if AMD is good enough when compared to UltraSPARC-IIi Processor then i will buy UltraSPARC-IIi Processor.....Can anyone let me...i Will be really greatfull to them...

Thanks a lot,
Jithendra

The CPU is reliable.

But what you find are people who build boxes with no ventilation, stressed power supplies and blame the CPU.

Go figure.

To answer your question....

The 146 is a 2 Gigahertz CPU. AMD and Intel have BOTH discontinued the use of "Gigahertz" designations in favor of performance specifications in their higher-end processors. With Dual-core chips, etc, the new cpu's speed ratings don't depend upon sheer processor speeds any longer.

Sun has been THE "Reliability Company" for ages. Sun made the move to the x64 CPU in deference to the sparc due to the advanced design of the AMD cpu, and you can bet they did extensive testing before validating it's use in their equipment. Sun decided to move to the "x86" platform, and chose AMD's chips based upon performance, reliability, and COMPATIBILITY. I am sure that if you are considering a Sun solution, you'll want to do some research yourself as I know I would, and I'd look for information on Sun's website, as well as reviews of their products elsewhere, but you need not worry about the reliability or performance with the AMD processor!
