Question

AMD master program - game mode crash

Apr 2, 2018 11:28AM PDT

So what happened was that I tried to apply the 'game mode' (default settings of this mode) in the ryzen master software and after giving permission to restart and apply the settings it immediately displayed the bsod and restarted to a black screen. I can't even go to bios.

Build:
MSI Tomahawk b350
Ryzen 1600x
GTX 1070ti
2x8GB gskill ram
Windows 10 64bits

I have tried to unplug the power supply and restarting.. and even took out the CMOS battery for a few secs to reset the bios to default options and undue any setting that amd's program might have changed. But still black screen..

What could it be? Tomorrow I'll try to leave my desktop in the hands of professionals but just wanted to see if I could try something in the meantime. Any help would be much appreciated.

Try obvious.

Don't do that. I find that the Ryzens are very picky about BIOS updates and drivers. You have to use either the latest (which works most of the time for me) or find which drivers work (painful to figure out IMO.)

-> What is this about can't go to the BIOS? This could indicate a much worse failure. If the machine fails to show BIOS or boot screens it's not a driver issue but a hardware failure. Tell more.

Yeah.. never should've done it. Just thought that no software would 'break' anything so I tried. Really thought that the worst thing that could happen was having a bsod but still being able to go to bios and change everything to default.

It just doesn't go to bios screen.. always black. The keyboard light is also turned off..
The motherboard does not display any leds besides the 'design' ones (fans and cooler leds and a red line that surrounds the board. It doesn't even go into a bootloop because it stays on all the time but with no display.

OK. It is dead.

Time to remove all power. Be sure to unplug all USB things too.

Now press and hold the power button for 60 seconds. Release, connect power and the bare minimum devices (we don't need USB keyboard etc. yet.) We go for a power up. If still dead, it's something hardware.

At that point we are in the case to make it as small as possible. Even to the point of no-case.

Scary title

Just did that.. disconnected all usb and all drives. But this time I also took the CMOS battery for more than a minute. Turned it back on and now I got a display saying "devices changed or CMOS have been cleared. Please enter setup to configure your system. F1 for setup and f2 to load default values and continue.*
Should go for f2 right?

Too bad about the CMOS step.

I don't write to do that but sure, F2 if you don't know settings for your model.

I know.. I was just panicking Happy.

I still have to reconnect everything and see if I can get to dektop. Only after that I will heave a sigh of relief. I will be back either to post good news or bad news.

But I really appreciate you for caring and helping me out with options and insight. Thank you!!

Sorry for the scary moment and title.

I need to be clear what state things are in. The method of removing power and holding the power button for 60 seconds has found to revive laptops, tablets, phones, and a lot of other gear. It's no joke about "Did you turn it off and on again?" Sometimes the other computer that controls power on gets confused and this is a reset that really comes in handy to know about.
