Hello all, well I think my AMD 450 is on its last leg after 7 years with very little problems , I am going to build a new PC ,

New case / 400W P/S / fan http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=329194&Sku=B452-1018

I have a few questions ??
1, heat issues with AMD CPU
will there be any problems as far as heat

2, and how much over clocking will be possible

3, any suggestions will be welcomed

I only have a couple of quick comments...(I'm headed out the door!)

No, heat is no longer an issue with AMD- (if it ever was)...It's always been my CPU of choice simply for performance and value. Just use a good Heatsink and the required number of Fans to have some nice System Temps (Pretty easy).

Two...Why Overclock. The risks far exceed any benefits unless you bench test the thing...If you want it faster, buy a faster processor to begin with.

And last....SHOP HERE- They have a MUCH better reputation than tigerdirect and their service in unsurpassed.

Look Here to compare store ratings concerning customer satisfaction and you'll see what I mean

Good luck! Building your own is FUN!

Heat is a MAJOR issue with AMD, run a processor for 1 second without a fan/heatsink and you get to buy a new one.

If you don't believe it go to www.tomshardware.com and check out his info and pictures on the major problems with AMD and heat.

The Intel processors have not had the same problems, they just slow down (or crash the system) if they get too hot, replacing the fan is all I have ever had to do.

Why would you do that?

I mean, run the CPU without a HSF? You wouldn't do that to an Intel either. I'm sure it would damage the Intel as well.
Intel guys always are quick to point out heat issues with AMD. It does not mean they are inferior. Bang for the buck...we know who wins. If you know what you are doing, heat is a non-issue.
Ever see the HONKING fan on a stock P4? The heat is a concern there as well.

Agreed Tom!
I think it pretty much goes without saying you don't run a CPU without a Heatsink and Fan. And don't think for a minute an Intel CPU can't be turned into toast, because it can.

Bottom line, I've seen these "AMD vs Intel" discussions go on forever and never get resolved...Both are reliable these days. Again proper cooling is important no matter what.

BTW...In addition to three AMD's, I also own a P4 (that I like a lot), so I'm not one of those pigheaded "mine is better than yours" kind of guy. Just think AMD gives you more Bang for the Buck that's all. (IMHO of course) Wink

If you want to build the sys yourself just for fun that is OK.

Be aware when you do that you are tech support.

If you go to a place like this
http://www.monarchcomputer.com/

They will build most anything you want, just plug in the parts you want and they will give you a price.

Compare their price to your price.

If they build it they are tech support.

As for over clocking, IMO that is a good way to make smoke.

I made the same jump as you.

I would go with www.newegg.com for starters. All the shipping costs are given UP FRONT unlike others. They are fast and cheap.
I would go with a better video card. The series you selected is kind of dated. Power supply...go with 500.
MSI is my choice for motherboards.

Good Luck and have fun!
