AMD 3700 939 Socket Worth upgrading?? Help

Hi everyone. Just wondering on some advice from someone who knows a little more than I may. I have a HP with AMD 3700 in it currently, which I believe is a socket 939 board. I see AMD has some dual cores for pretty good prices online that are 939. I dont do a whole lot of gaming except some command and conquer online now and then. But I am always multitasking, running scans while surfin the net, working on photos. Would it be worth it to upgrade to dual core? to speed things up when opening a ton of apps, would i notice the difference. Other specs on my system
AMD 3700
1gb ram
2 dvdrw drives
xp media center
amd radeon xpress 200 graphics

am also thinking of upgrading to vista which i heard is much better on a dual core system.

Regarding Vista

In reply to: AMD 3700 939 Socket Worth upgrading?? Help

Maybe re the thread that Robert Proffitt started in the XP forum about Vista possibly becoming the next ME.

Does your mobo have a Graphics card slot [AGP or X16}? Might want better video for the Aero of Vista. Then of course a new power supply. Good Luck.

Probably not

First off, not all Socket 939 boards can accept dual core chips, so that's potential problem #1. It's made worse by the fact that you have an HP. All brand name computer makers make money by buying the cheapest components possible. This almost without exception, means a motherboard with very limited upgrade potential. So there's even less chance that your system could accept a dual core chip without a motherboard transplant, which would invalidate your Windows license and require you to buy a new one on top of the cost of the new chip. All assuming HP hasn't rigged the case design to rely on exact placement of slots and plugs with the factory board.

Now, if you wanted to build a new system, and cannibalize parts from your HP system, you would significantly improve your odds of success. Short of that, save your money for a new system with a dual/quad/octal core CPU in it.

which is not cheap (about $250). The am2 socket board has X2 cpu down to $130. Of course plain old amd 64; you can get one for less than $65.
