Am I dreaming?

Apr 8, 2005 11:59AM PDT

I am looking for a notebook, under 3 lbs. screen size of 12.1", with wireless, 512MB RAM, 40 GB HD, XP professional, with an internal CDROM/DVD player etc. all for under $2000. Does it exist or am I just dreaming?

Have you looked?

Well I guess that depends if you've looked. If you looked and couldn't find it, I'd say that's because it's a pretty darn exclusive feature set.

Something's got to be your compromise point. Be it the (rather demanding) sub-3-lb weight, or the price, or the screen size.

The sony T series starts at 3.1 lbs but has a 10" screen and is well above 2 grand . . .

Were it me . . . I would go with the 12" powerbook. At 4.6lbs and $1499, it's a good deal, and a fair match to what you want.

Then again, there's also the new Dell Latitude X1, a 12.1" widescreen and an attractive design with a weight of 2.5lbs starting at 1500. Not bad but the optical drive is not inside (like the powerbook).

The aging dell latitude X300 is also a choice at 2.9 lbs and a 12.1" square screen, for around 1300. And either model would be available for cheaper as a refurb item. But again, neither has an optical drive inside it.

I would go with the Powerbook, honestly. If you can use a mac, go for it.

Any way you slice it, you're going to have to give something up. Price, Screen size, or weight. I've been playing around with a Latitude D400 which is about 4.5 lbs, and let me tell you, if a computer was 2.5 lbs or 4.5 lbs, it really doesn't make a difference for me. Either one super lightweight and easy to whip around with you and tote.
