Am I better off with built-in tuners?

Dec 16, 2005 1:30AM PST

Seems to me that a built in tuner is the way to go... fewer pieces of equipment, fewer cables, fewer connections, right? I read somewhere that set-top tuners were a better investment because they could change the HD standards in two years and make TVs with built in tuners obsolete, whereas you can easily swap set-top boxes if that happens.

What's the real deal?

Dish network the way to go

I own the dish 811 system with the hi-def over the air tuner built in. and its hot I receive 18 local hi-def channels with a cheap outside antenna. I pay $45.00 per month fo VOOM , Hi-def package and basic service. and I have tons of hi-def channels to watch I use the d.v.i. output and optical audio for stunning picture and sound, Dont bother with h.b.o. or showtime because you only get one of those in hi-def Also if you go for Dish e mail me and I will send you a gift # for free upgrades and goddies and I receive $5.00 of my bill for a year I have givin away 4 of these gift # and I save $20.00 per month marry xmas stewart norrie cadillacstew@aol.com

Am I better off with built-in tuners?

Well Yes!! then you can get broadcast HDTV.
All TVs 13" and over will have ATSC OTA tuners by 2007.

Ah.. they are NOT going to change the HDTV standards, who ever wrote that is totaly clueless about what it took to get the current HDTV standards. The NTSC standards were developed back it the late 1930s, updated for color in the 1950s and are still here, so I belive that the ATSC HD standards will be around for a long time. John

um

it depends. MOST hdtv's have built in tuners now, so it doesnt really matter. the built in tuner ONLY matters if you are watching tv with an antenna. if you have cable or satellite, NO MATTER WHAT, you are going to need some kind of a box or cable card to pick up THEIR HD channels.

a tv having a built in HD tuner or not should not be the difference maker for MOST people.

most ppl use cable boxes or dvrs anyway, so why bother with the integrated stuff. should it ever fail, you'll be stuck wouldn;t you, while if its external, you can just switch out.
