If you don't like the iPod, your choice of MP3 player is as great as the next guys.
There are literally dozens of MP3 players out there that will serve your purpose. You might even find one that provides software so that you can download tracks from your computer to your device. If you are really lucky, you may even find one that works with an on-line music store that supports your computer.
Having said that, I wouldn't hold my breath about the last one.
Basically, while the iPod and iTunes works with both Windows and Mac, none of the other players out there, or the on-line music stores, support both platforms. When the manufactures of those devices, and MS, refer to "giving the user more choice" what they actually mean is that they produce a device and software that will only work on one platform and if you don't use that platform, hard luck. Take a look at the iPod Nano, with flash memory, and compare prices with the others. You will find that what you thought was expensive, is not quite that bad.

I have a Mac because I like OSC and I do a lot of video work with FCP. Mac's are kind of an industry standard in my business but I really dislike iPods! They are WAY overpriced and not that great. Are there any alternatives for a Mac user?
