All Sites Lost In Bookmarks Tab, Why ???

Jan 2, 2011 5:53AM PST

Hi

When adding websites using Bookmarks how does one keep them permanently ? Today i switched on my Mac and all my websites have been removed.. leaving only a white empty file with no link to the site. Some sites still remain with icons (don't know why) but the rest have been removed. I'm talking hundreds of sites saved over several months, this would take days to go online and manually gain all sites back by hand. Went in to Safari > preferences > RSS, and settings were already at remove articles "Never" So why have all my sites disappeared ? Is the nothing i can do to retrieve all the websites back ? How about Time Machine ???

Time machine might work for you

Launch Safari and then Time Machine.

Go back to a date where you know the bookmarks were there, and restore

Can't Open Time Machine ?
Jan 3, 2011 7:41AM PST

Hi

I've tried launching Time Machine several times but it confirms (storage location for Time Machine is not set up) i then proceed to set up as follows.. set up Time Machine > choose back up disc > set up time capsule. After this a window confirms (airport utility was unable to find any airport wireless devices, make sure the airport wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of the computer) I'm using a Mac laptop 5.1 Leopard 10.5 connected via wireless broadband, so why can't i open Time Machine ?

What you are really saying
Jan 3, 2011 9:07AM PST

is that you do not have a Time Machine backup of your machine, despite having a TIme Capsule device on your wireless network.

That said, are you sure you are not confusing the two terms? Time Machine and Time Capsule are two completely different things.
Time Machine is software, Time Capsule is hardware.
Follow the instructions that came with the Time Capsule and set it up correctly on your wireless network. Then you will be able to configure your Time Machine backups but it is too late to recover the missing bookmarks.

When you say Wireless Broadband, would that be Cable broadband with a wireless router or DSL broadband with a wireless router?

You misunderstand what I am saying to you.

Right now, because you have not configured Time Capsule to appear on your wireless network and have never been able to set up Time Machine because of that fact, you do NOT have ANY data to recover.

There are no Time Machine backups for you to retrieve data from.

Drag out the instruction leaflet that came with Time Capsule and configure it to work on your wireless network.
Then you can start making Time Machine backups.
Shade late and a dollar short, but hopefully it will prevent you losing any further data

Made a Back Up Copy...
Jan 4, 2011 9:34AM PST

It's just as well i made a back up copy of all my websites on disc, still i would like to know how to use Time Machine to back up any lost data.

Not sure how many times I have to repeat this,
Jan 4, 2011 8:55PM PST

but,

Drag out the instructions that came with the Time Capsule and get the Time Capsule working on your wireless network.

Once that is functional, you can set up Time Machine.

You never did answer any of my questions.

So Thats How it Is...
Jan 5, 2011 1:38AM PST

My apologies for the confusion, I'm not familiar with Time Machine, and I thought it was the Macs internal drive that backed up all data if one needed to recover any changes. i had no idea it was an External Hard Drive, Wireless Time Capsule, or Network Drive in order to use Time Machine. Thats why i could never initiate TM because i never has anything connected.

Why doesn't the internal drive back up the data? and what exactly is a Wireless Time Capsule?

Time Capsule
Jan 5, 2011 4:56AM PST

is something you told me that you had. "I then proceed to set up as follows.. set up Time Machine > choose back up disc > set up time capsule."
Perhaps I misunderstood you and I now assume that you do not actually have a Time Capsule device.
In light of that, I'll start again.
Time Machine:
A piece of software that takes hourly backups of your internal, and external drives if so configured, and stores them on an external hard drive. (Backing up to your internal drive (the boot drive) does not really constitute a good backup. Backing up your data to the drive that the data is contained on is pointless. If the drive fails for some reason, and they all do, then you have lost the original data and the backup.

Go to your local Computer store and buy yourself a large, greater than 500GB, USB hard drive.
Connect it to your Mac and power it up. The system will ask you if you want to use this drive as a Time Machine backup. Say Yes and that's all there is to it.

What version of OS X are you using?

External USB.
Jan 5, 2011 5:53AM PST

So i take it Time Capsule is Apples equivalent to any other kind of external USB drive except probably better? Meaning i could just as well purchase any brand of external drive and use that to back everything up?

I'm with OS X Leopard 10.5

Yes, any Hard Drive will do.

The Time Capsule is not just a hard drive, it does a number of other things too but all you are interested in is getting a decent backup.
