General discussion

All Norton Products

I have recently installed Windows XP Pro as my O/S from years of running 98SE. I have managed to install all of my old programs with the exception of my newest ones....Norton Internet Security Professional 2003. I get the "ROLLBACK" action every way that I attempt to install it. I have done everything asked of me by Symantec to Install including messing with my Registry. I have tried installing Norton Anti-Virus 2001, 2002, 2003 (I have purchased everyone of those years) and they all react the same way. Now Norton is trying to tell me that my Windows Installer is out of date, when I follow the link that they supply I discover that what they mean is that my Windows Installer that came with XP version 2 is to new for them and that they want me to install the Windows Installer for the earlier versions of Windows version 1.1. This is stupid, I have since then installed Zone Alarm with Virus Protection, with no problem, Trend Micro with Anti-Virus and Firewall, and MacAfee all with no problem. What makes Norton so special....what a waste of my time and money!

1. "XP version 2" ? The current release is SP1, I think. I can't imagine Norton wouldn't install under SP1.
2. Waste of money #1: buying each years new version of Norton, if a paying for a new year for anti-virus suffices.
3. Waste of money #2: buying ZoneAlarm AND Trend AND McAfee. Unnecessary and potentially harmful to run more than 1 firewall and more than 1 real-time anti-virus simultaneously.

There are about 3 things you can do
1. Do what Symantec tell EVERYONE when a program of theres does something it isn't meant to Uninstall and Reinstall it.
2. If that doesn't work try using RNAV 2003 (via this link: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/df0a595864594c86852567ac0063608c/33497f6e8a319ece88256ace0076cc02?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam
and try to get rid of all the remaining registry keys (after which you will need to restart))
3. If that doesn't work the only other answer (unless you want to install another AntiVirus program) would be to format the OS and see if that will work.
If not start looking for another AntiVirus program
There should be nothing wrong with your "Windows Installer" that came with your version of Windows XP it is compatible with all of Symantecs programs.

That should work,...

...as soon as you install WinXP Service Pack 1 and ALL critical updates AND uninstall all AV and firewall software completely, including cleaning the Registry to get rid of all references to the software you've uninstalled. I recommend you go to http://www.hoverdesk.net and download their free RegSeeker app, which'll do a safe and complete Registry scrub.

Now, on to what's also creating your problems:

This is stupid, I have since then installed Zone Alarm with Virus Protection, with no problem, Trend Micro with Anti-Virus and Firewall, and MacAfee all with no problem.

Let's see...Three anti-virus programs and three firewalls? Running more than one AV program or firewall does NOT confer more protection; it DOES guarantee this kind of issue, with programs conflicting with each other. Choose ONE firewall (I recommend Zone Alarm) and ONE AV program (I recommend either Norton or Trend Micro)
