[ ! ] All I can see is my wallpaper. I need your help.

On 7/6/08 I got something called W32/Virut.Gen, ever since then my computer has been acting oddly.

I start my computer, log on to my account, and all I can see is my desktop background and my cursor. I can't see the desktop icon or start menu. I was able to get on the internet by using the Task Manager.

Can give me simple steps to get my computer back to normal?

couple things...

In reply to: Not working

There's a couple things I can think of off the top of my head both of which involve virus scans.

First Method:

First of all, what, if any, anti-virus programs do you have installed on your computer? If you can get my that info, I'll try and find a way for you to start it without your icons or any of that so that you can run a scan hopefully getting rid of your virus. Also, what operating system if your computer?

Second Method:

Restart into safe mode. Here's a link on how to restart into safe mode for various Windows operating systems.

That might get your start menu and icons back in which case you can start whatever security program you have yourself. Note, if you can do this, try to find the option in the program to check for updates before scanning.

I'll probably think of other things to try later, but, for now, try one or both of those. Hope that helps! Happy

I had a virus problem before and got rid of it, but this time I have no idea what I'm trying to get rid of.

I have a Dell Dimension B 110 Desktop PC, Windows XP. AntiVir PE Classic, HiJackThis, and VundoFix.
