All HD Enclosures Created Equal?

Jan 12, 2010 9:10AM PST

Looking for a HD enclosure for a 2.5" IDE 9.5mm hard drive that is compatible with Microsoft Vista and Mac OSX or higher. Other than finding an enclosure to meet those specs is there anything else that I should be worried about when shopping for an enclosure?

You bet.

Other areas are:

1. Does it come with a power supply? Some laptops don't provide enough to power up those drives.
2. Does it come with some USB Y CABLE to help with power?
3. Is it rugged? Some are better than others at surviving a few inch drop.

I'd say 'NO', they're not all equal..

Not all 2.5" external enclosures can handle 500GB HDDs.

Some support USB 2.0, eSATA and Firewire...other don't.

Some come with AC adapters ....others don't.

Shop carefully !
