All External Hard drives freeze Windows 7

Western Digital hard drive either froze my pc or causes major stuff ups on installation. Western walked me thru for 1 hour then told me to return it faulty as nothing worked when they walked me thru it. My 2nd mimicked the 1st one so what was the point in calling Wseatern again! retunred the 2nd and opted for Seagate which of course immediately froze and mimicked the other two. If Western cant help me, can anyone suggest? Front USB 2.0 ports (only esata on rear port) only and yes the external drives have external power source (using desktop emachine by Acer EL1850)
