"All black people, leave store now" - NJ Walmart

Mar 18, 2010 1:10AM PDT

Prank? Joke in bad taste? What if the speaker had said "all white people, leave store now", what would the reaction be? I'd probably laugh.

LINK

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- A Walmart store announcement ordering black people to leave brought chagrin and apologies Wednesday from leaders of the company, which has built a fragile trust among minority communities.

A male voice came over the public-address system Sunday evening at a store in Washington Township, in southern New Jersey, and calmly announced: "Attention, Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now."

Shoppers in the store at the time said a manager quickly got on the public-address system and apologized for the remark. And while it was unclear whether a rogue patron or an employee was responsible for the comment, many customers expressed their anger to store management.

a customer did it.
Any race baiters jump on it yet?

I don't know

But knowing teens and perhaps some working at the store, there's all sorts of pranks that will go on, and not all are well thought through first.

That was stupid and maybe even more stupid
Mar 18, 2010 3:04AM PDT

was the media need to report it. What good would that serve? What good do some of our media serve anyway? Wink

If it was done by a member of store management ,
Mar 18, 2010 3:34AM PDT

Then it might be a story, otherwise I agree that it's only done to inflame.

IF the quotes were accurate
Mar 18, 2010 3:41AM PDT

....... could there have been a bigger negative reaction had the story not been reported?

The reporter males no claim of being in the store at the time of the incident, so it appears the media was contacted.

I agree that publishing this genre of events is troublesome. But no one who complains wants to be ignored.

Thought...
Mar 18, 2010 4:05AM PDT

The last time I was in a WalMart the PA system and mike was located at the Customer Service desk. WalMart has recorders and security cameras all over the store. As that area deals with checks and money, I would think that that area would be under the eye of one of the security cameras. If so, what does the recording show?

Most likey,
Mar 18, 2010 4:09AM PDT

there are plenty of other phones located throughout the store that could be used for pages.(even on the sales floor so a customer get get ahold of it)

Well, then let the store report and handle it
Mar 18, 2010 4:07AM PDT

as they desire before someone else runs to the media. I'd almost think, in such a case as this, fallout would be predictable and Walmart...or anyone....would be well off to be proactive and rat themselves out right away just to show their integrity. It's a shame it's come to this sort of crap, IMO.

Walmart "mikes" unsecured?
Mar 18, 2010 4:34AM PDT

They might think about securing their microphones better in the future, because others reading about this might decide to prank their own local walmart too.

Wal-Mart Intercom Investigation Points to Shopper
Mar 19, 2010 11:21PM PDT
The racist statement was made from one of 25 phones located throughout the sales floor and in areas accessible to employees only.

Huh!? But then how....??

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local-beat/Wal-Mart-Intercom-Investigation-Evidence-Points-to-Shopper-88694627.html

Wal-Mart says it may have been a customer who broadcast a hateful message over a South Jersey store's intercom system.

Several shoppers are boycotting the retail giant and its Washington Township, N.J. store after a man said "Attention Wal-Mart customers: All black people leave the store now" over the store's public address system last Sunday.

"It was a disgusting comment," shopper Sheila Ellington said. "Once I heard that, I was absolutely shocked and appalled."

Seems like an overreaction to me.

Hopefully the kid and parents won't plead it down, but fight it. the only way to make a legal stink go away is to make a bigger stink over it.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Teen-charged-in-NJ-Walmart-apf-588972312.html?x=0&sec=topStories&pos=2&asset=&ccode=

-- A 16-year-old boy patronizing a Walmart store in southern New Jersey took over the public-address system and ordered black people to leave, angering customers and prompting company leaders to apologize, police said Saturday.

Police said the boy, whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile, went on the intercom at Walmart's Washington Township store Sunday evening and calmly announced: "Attention, Walmart customers: All black people, leave the store now."

The teen was arrested Friday on charges of harassment and bias intimidation. Authorities said he was released to the custody of his parents; they did not know whether he had a lawyer.

And Who/what did they charge? A white teen age boy

You didn't even see him and you knew....I wonder why, but not for long.

Do white teen age boys need to go to Second City and learn what's funny and what's not, and the PA in Walmart is NOT Yuk Yuk?

Will he be the "Last Comic Standing?"..make him a WalMart Associate for 2 years at reduced salary.

actually, I've been expecting....
Mar 20, 2010 6:50PM PDT

...to hear the prankster is black. Of course a crime of "bias" could only be charged if he was white. Yes? We'll find out eventually.

This incident makes me wonder if "Black Friday" next Thanksgiving season is a no go. Will "White Sales" be a thing of the past? Inquiring minds want to know. Wink

Demographics
Mar 20, 2010 8:09PM PDT

Checking the demographics in the area, it seems to be 90% white, 5% black, the other 5% of other such as Hispanic. So, there's only a one in twenty chance the prankster was black. Most likely is white. That would explain why they are using the word "bias" already.

Also "potential hate crime". HA HA HA! Who dreams up this stuff?! Liberals who consult belly button lint for guidance I guess, LOL.

The store has also been criticized for the ease at which anyone could make a storewide page.

Former employee Bill Mitchell said making a page is as simple as hitting a couple of keys on any of the phones.

"They could do better things to secure those phones, but they don't follow those protocols," Mitchell said. "That's Wal-Mart."

The company says they have since changed the phone system to "prevent this from happening in the future."

Funny you should mention that
Mar 20, 2010 8:29PM PDT

My wife and I have spoken about our own observations about how the clientele differs from store name to store name. We also discuss that we could probably walk into some stores blindfolded and know the store's name....by its smell. Walmart does seem to attract its own crowd but I'd think it's just as wrong to feel prejudice against them for being "Walmart" people. Maybe someone could walk into a Macys or Saks, grab a PA mic, and say, "All Walmart shoppers need to leave the store immediately". The "crime", IMO, would be no worse.

That's an odd collection ...
Mar 20, 2010 8:53PM PDT

No way I'm going to go through every page ... but that's an odd collection of photos.

You do have to wonder, though, what people had to say about having their pictures taken, and whether the store personnel reacted in some way.

I saw at least one photo that almost HAD to be staged. I did like the 4 wheeler on the back of a sedan.

LOL, yes, so if....
Mar 20, 2010 10:52PM PDT

....by chance one not yet fully grown troglodyte was overly and overtly tempted to prank Walmart on their easily accessible PA system, considering the eclectic group that shops there, why should the law make such a fuss over it? I would think it's more a civil matter between Walmart and the individual. What's the charge for an unauthorized person using store equipment? It's not stealing. Maybe a trespass, like cutting across a neighbor's lawn without permission?

I'm also curious how the TV news got there quickly enough to catch the ones they interviewed about how upset they were? I wonder if they beat the police there?

what is a "hate" crime?
Mar 23, 2010 3:13AM PDT

Seems the definition changes according to who interprets it, or chooses to ignore it, or overdoes it. Compare what is really little more than a prank to what is a real hate crime in my opinion, in the same area.

http://cofcc.org/2010/03/is-walmart-hate-crime-another-hate-crime-hoax-suspect-may-be-black/

The Walmart incident occurred right outside Philadelphia. Compare it to this story. A mob of black students went on a violent rampage beating Asian students at random at a public High School. 30 Asian students were attacked and seven were sent to the hospital. Groups of 10-15 blacks attacked lone Asians.

The school district, which is mostly run by blacks, is protecting the black students from criminal prosecution and blaming the Asian students for somehow bringing the violence on themselves. This story has received less than 1% of the news coverage of the Walmart P.A. prank, in which no one was injured. The High School is 71% black and 16% Asian. Read More.

Felony Charges?! Are they serious, or stupid to the max.
Mar 23, 2010 3:37AM PDT

What if they'd tossed black cotton balls at the white cultural center? Oh, wait, they'd first need a white cultural center. Hate crimes, just another manufactured lie to pervert justice.

http://cofcc.org/2010/03/two-white-college-kids-face-felony-hate-crimes-for-racist-cotton-balls/

Two white students, who are believed to have dumped out a bag of cotton balls in front of the University of Missouri Black Student Center, have been arrested and face felony charges. Police say they may file ?hate crime? enhancement charges. Both students have been suspended from college.

This absurd story has received major publicity in every newspaper and television affiliate in Missouri for several days now. Ironically, if a black student had raped a white female student it would have received 1% as much publicity and there would be no talk of ?hate crimes.?
