Airport HELP

Apr 4, 2007 4:19AM PDT

Hello

I am quie confused about Apple's Airport technology.

First off I am amazed at Apple's release of the 8 core Mac Pro. It looks like they overclocked it because Intels highest quad core speed is 2.66 Gh and if consumers think that the manufacturers overclocked then they should return the computer.

Anyways on to my questions. I have read Apple's website and I am still reading over it for thorough knowledge. The word Airport will be referred to as A from now on.

Can I connect my ADSL USB modem to A express and use it to onnect to the internet?

Apart from 802.11n and more connectible computers, what is the differnce between A exp and extreme?

Can I connect two Macs, lets say an iMac and MAcbook, with each other wirelessly without a router or A nearby. Just like Bluetooth.

What would be the difference between A exp and a repeater regarding Apple's claim that the A can extend your networks range. Wouldnt buying an A exp be better?

What other cool and unique features does A exp include? Do you think that it would be a good purchase for absolutely basic usage? eg. Small-Medium size file sharing, extention of current Siemens router range. etc

Thank You

No. Since this USB modem is unusable I'll stop here.

Intel's Xeon line officially tops out with the 2.66-GHz 5355 processor, which is the fastest chip that can be dropped into Dell's Precision workstations. According to reports, however, the brand-new 3-GHz chip offered by Apple is in "limited production," and the computer maker grabbed what supply was available.

Airport Express will act as a repeater or a router/print server for up to 10 users and one USB printer.
It is simple to configure and only requires a power outlet, plugs directly into it, and a network connection from the Modem. (Not USB)
The wireless uses 80211a/b/g

Airport Extreme will act as the above for up to 50 users, a USB HD or Printer and up to three other network devices.
It is simple to configure and only require a power outlet, adapter plugs into it, and a netork connection from the Modem (Not USB)
The wireless uses 80211a/b/g/n

Two Mac's, each with an airport card, can connect directly to each other without the use of a router or Airport Express. This is called Ad Hoc networking.

The Airport Extreme Base Station would reach further, as claimed, but buying an Airport Express would be cheaper.

Airport express would work reasonably well for Small-Medium size file sharing but may not do what you want with regard to extending the Siemens router range. (Wireless??)

Further details are freely available at the apple site

That answers my questions. Thanks a lot!

I have figured out/decided that I will take an Ethernet wire from my Siemens router and bring all the way to my other room and plug it into the airport express and I think I have got myself a nice wireless network.

I do have one last question. I I connect the a exp as mentioned above and I have a computer connected to the Siemens then can I share files and stuff?

As long as File Sharing is turned on, on both machines, you will be able to move files from one computer to another
