Given Bill's post about getting legitimate items through security, it makes me wonder... The person who found the gun must have been carrying it on their person until such time that they reached an appropriate official to hand it over to. Rather she than I in today's climate.

Since all the security checks are getting into the departure area now, or at least my limited experience.
If you found a gun on a plane, you could probably stick it in your carry on, or even belt under a jacket, and walk right out with it.
Of course, if you did get caught, OH BOY would you be in deep guano.
