AIM's IM greetings no longer free?

Oct 26, 2004 3:33PM PDT

I could have sworn that just last week (October 19th), I was trying out the "Send IM Greeting" feature in AIM. It led me to a website where I got to pick an icon or small animation to send to one of my buddies. When I selected one of them, it either sent my buddy a link, or there was a link that I was allowed to cut and paste to my buddy (I don't remember exactly). The link led to a page that had the greeting I selected.

I could have sworn it was called an "IM greeting." Am I mistaken? Or is it called something else?

In any case, this cool little option was free!

However, now when I try and send an IM greeting, it brings me to a page that looks completely different. All of the greetings are animated, and you have to be a paying member to use the IM greeting option now.

Did they just recently (within the past week) start charging for IM greetings?!?! Why!??! I want it free!!!

Any knowledge on the subject is appreciated.
