No.

What are you trying to install? Most sound/video/etc. cards have a PCI alternate.

No, you cannot just add an AGP slot. I went to the Dell site and, if I read correctly, this model mentions having a certain amount of shared memory which would mean it has integrated graphics. These are probably connected to an AGP interface/controller which is part of the sort of PCI on steroids and part of the PCI bus anyway. It could usually connect to what is the "north bridge" (I think) of the chipset. So, if I am correct, you have AGP already which is only dedicated by definition to a graphics device. I don't speak the technical language but I think I am mostly correct. Hope this helps.

I will not buy a 2400 or let a client buy a 2400 because they are too low end, and have no AGP capability.

There is no way to add one. If your system is less than 30 days old return it and get a 4600.

Depends on what Chip Set you have in your Dell 2400. Some companies produce computers with "Integrated Graphics", but also have a slot for AGP graphics, whereas you can disengage the Integrated and add a AGP Graphics Video Card. These Intel Chip Sets come with Integrated Graphics but also have an AGP slot:

864G
845G
845GE
815
815E

You may have looked inside to see or Dell has told you that you do not have an AGP slot. These Intel Chip Sets have Integrated Graphics with NO AGP slot:

865GV
845GL
845GV
810
810E
440MX

With no AGP slot you can install a PCI card to replace the Integrated Graphics. Newegg.com has three models:

Apollo nVidia GeForce FX 5200, PCI, 128MB DDR, DVI/TV Out $69

Chaintech nVidia GeForce FX 5200, PCI, 128MB DDR, 128-Bit, DVI/TV Out $72

Gainward nVidia GeForce FX 5200, PCI , 64MBDDR, 64-Bit, DVI/TV Out $73

Best Buy sometimes has sales on the PCI GeForce FX 5200. They also have a eVGN E-GeForce2 MX-400, 64MB, PCI Graphics Card for $49 on sale, however, I suggest staying with the FX 5200, 128MB.

Circuity City has a VisionTek Xtasy 9200SE 128MB DDR PCI or AGP card for $49.99 after mail in rebates.

My suggestion is to go for the Chaintech FX5200, PCI 128MB DDR, 128-Bit. Could have driver problems with the ATI base 9200SE on some games.

BTW if you decide to return the Dell 2400 and get a model 4600, then watch as the basic Dell Dimension 4600 Desktop comes equiped with "INTEGRATED GRAPHICS". You need to customize it for AGP GRAPHICS ( & sound).
