aftermath of a fried motherboard... :??

Mar 4, 2014 12:50AM PST

Hi, someone please help me here. I have so many questions but the internet forums are a maze to me.

I built my computer in 2011. Windows 7, intel i5 2500k processor, Asus p8p87 rev 3 motherboard etc.

Recently, when I tried to wake it up from sleep mode, it froze and shut down. Ever since, whenever i turn it on, everything runs ,fans, lights... but no POST. I've tried reseating every part and clearing CMOS battery etc.but nothing seems to work.

I think it's either the Motherboard or the CPU that's fried...

What should i do now? The most important thing to me is getting my data back off my harddrives. I have a system image created, but i'm confused about it.

1) can i restore my old system image after installing a new motherboard and another copy of windows 7 for my setup?

2) I'm thinking about updating to windows 8. Can i restore my old windows 7 system image on windows 8.1?

new motherboard, windows, and probably another harddisk for a fresh install...that's already 200 pounds... and it's not even guaranteed to fix it. maybe it's the CPU... I don't have any spare parts to test... It's becoming quite costly.

3) I'm thinking about just buying a new laptop and buying some kind of sata harddrive to usb converter to access my files.
3a) would i be able to system image restore on a window 8 laptop?

Basically my motherboard is fried and i want to get my data back. I have a system image on a hardrive... what do i do?

What I can do

Is restore the system image to a blank drive (the question is not how but what to do next) and now we have an unencumbered drive with files we can access from our new or borrowed PC.

-> I would be guessing you want to boot that restored drive on a new PC but as millions have discovered that rarely works. I won't duplicate the web on how to fix a broken windows OS today. However you can google it. Here's the phrase on that. "How to change motherboards and save Windows 7".

Data is what is retrieved

I don't why your mtrbd. or PC doesn't boot for now, but if you want your data, then you can remove the HD itself. Take the HD and mount in an USB type ext. case -OR- mount inside a new desktop or jerry-rig it to access data using spare cables. All this hoping you know what to do to retrieve data.

If you plan to re-use the OS in a new PC, that may not be possible "as is" because you need to understand 1 OS per PC. You can install and then retrieve data as you maintain 1 OS per PC use but the old PC has to be forgotten. But, you plan to install win 8x, then you can use "windows file transfer" service build-in in Win7 and Win8, but for data only between these OSes. In from Win7 to Win7 PC, maybe more useful but again all about data NOT OS entirely. I realize this maybe confusing but there are so many PCs out there it has to vary, case by case.

You maybe better served and just get a new PC and be done with it. Then get a ext. USB case/dock and use that to retrieve you're old data from crashed PC. Of course, this assumes the HD itself is OK.

No system restore from a different OS to another, period.
