After Windows 10 upgrade, no screen saver or sleep

by lettsrobert / August 4, 2015 8:57 AM PDT

I upgraded from 7 to 10. The upgrade was smooth and I didn't see any issues immediately. But, after setting the power and screen saver settings, the monitor never went into standby and screen savers won't start. I did not try hibernation because I never used it before. I discovered that didn't work either. So, I regressed back to 7 and everything works as before. So, as a test, I installed a spare HDD and did a clean install from USB. Same issues as the upgrade. Maybe I'm nit-picky, but I want the monitor to go to power saver after 5 minutes. Any thoughts?

Sounds right to me.

The OS may be upgraded but then we have drivers and apps to update just like before when we went from one to another Windows version.

The short rundown of drivers and APPS (more on that in a second) are:
1. Motherboard driver package.
2. From the maker, audio, video, wifi, lan, etc.
3. APPS!!! For Dell you have Quickset, from others, other names. I can't find the make and model so I can't name it.

That is not an answer! You on drugs? The person asked: "After Windows 10 upgrade, no screen saver or sleep" - same with me!

In reply to: What?

There are folk new to Windows upgrades that don't know of the post upgrade work. They may want a fix for this or that and won't understand at first how things work.

I don't mind going over this area if members will share a little more about the problematic PC.

That is, the screensaver may not kick in even when set to do so if the machine's drivers and apps are not ready. This is far from automatic which can really test the limits of the PC owner's capability and patience.

You clearly have no concept of how to assist someone with a simple question.

The correct answer, provided by someone else, is below. Apparently you're see yourself a god's gift to the internet and some kind of genius. So it be best if you stayed away from the common folk. And avoid trying to answer questions outside of a hacker space.

Now find an article for when the screensaver doesn't kick in. What areas do you check up on?

Screen Saver won't hold upon restart
by ontheriver99 / September 7, 2015 2:23 AM PDT

My OS is Windows 10 64-bit, Intel Core i5-4210uCPU @ 10GHZ, 6.0GB Ram, Intel HD Graphics family.

When the screen saver is set for 15 minutes, it works fine until I power off then power back on. It resets itself to 1 minute, then doesn't go to screen saver at all until I reset the number of minutes to something besides 1 minute.

Thanks, in advance, for any assistance! Much appreciated.

Windows 10 Screen Saver solution
by atmguru222 / August 26, 2015 9:44 AM PDT

I upgraded to Windows 10 and had the same issue. The solution is that I unplugged my Logitech Pro from its USB connection, and the screen saver and sleep functions now work. There is an issue with the Logitech driver and Windows 10 Screen saver settings. I have seen that other control stick (joystick) brands have caused this problem as well. If you don't have a joystick and still have the screen saver/sleep problems, it is probably caused by another HID (Human Interface Device) connection or driver. You then have to turn off the drivers one-by-one until the problem disappears. The simpler solution is to turn the monitor off when not in use.

Hope this helps.

Could Be It
by lettsrobert / August 26, 2015 2:11 PM PDT

I have a Logitech Pro attached. I'll give it another try with that unplugged. If it isn't that, I'll start disabling HID devices. Thanks for the tip.

Logitech controller was root cause

Removed the joystick and everything works great. Windows 10 is fantastic so far. I hope this helps others. Cheers!

I was having the same problem with sleep and screensaver not working after an upgrade to Windows 10. The resolution was to unplug my USB game controller

So apparenly ...

In reply to: This Worked

you need a Windows 10 compatible driver for that, of it defective somehow and firing enough activity to have Windows think you're using it. And that, of course, means no screen saver and no sleep.

Does the manufacturers site have a new driver already? if not, contact their customer service and ask what they advice.

Also 3D Connection device
by ErikLtz / October 25, 2015 9:11 AM PDT

I had a 3DConnection device (now Logitech owned I believe) attached and experienced same problem, disconnecting it solved the problem (both screen saver, power save screen). Will check for driver update...

I have the same issue
by aliquis--2008 / January 13, 2016 10:05 PM PST

But with completely different devices.

Windows 10 sleep doesn't work with either of the Sony DualShock 4 gamepad controller with either InputMapper or DS4Windows (if the software even matters) nor does it work with the Nvidia Shield gamepad controller which uses Nvidia Geforce Experience as a driver.

Plug either controller out before going to sleep and it works, have either controller connected and it doesn't.

One can even close down Input Mapper / DS4Windows and it still doesn't work so I don't really think it's their drivers (and Logitechs) which is at fault but rather Microsofts for these kind of devices.

Windows 10 Screen Saver not working after installing W/10

I was just wondering! Does MS know this is happening? I am in the same ship!

Here I encounter a lot of folk completely new to PCs. That is, you write about drivers and apps and folk expected Microsoft to supply all that.

I just did a search on the MS web site ~ 200 hits for sleep.
by wpgwpg / September 6, 2015 8:08 PM PDT

After seeing the 200 hits for sleep mode there, I didn't even look for screen saver reports. I remember disabling hibernation, but screen savers are working on my 2 desktops with Windows 10. Remember this is a brand new version of Windows and as such is bound to have some bugs.
Good luck.

same issue, no fix
by sdmf74 / September 23, 2015 8:02 PM PDT

Same issue here, I have tried evrything I can think of its definately not my mouse. I even clean installed windows 10 home and pro and still no screensaver. tried it with clean install and through all the stages of installing motherboard drivers and apps. Has to be an issue with microsoft. Pretty damn annoying.

Driver for Logitech device NOT the answer...
by ontheriver99 / September 28, 2015 5:09 PM PDT
In reply to: same issue, no fix

I found a post stating that updated drivers were needed for a Logitech device , contacted Logitech, and there are NO drivers for my headset. I tried unplugging it after power off, and the screen saver 15minutes held for 2 restarts. Now it's back to defaulting to 1 minutes upon power off power on, and screen saver not working. It DOES work when I reset the number of minutes each session. Annoying, but at least it's working until MS figures out they've screwed this part up...

In reply to: ?

You may be calling the wrong company. I've lost count of folk that are forgetting about drivers needed after we install or upgrade Windows. With now some million different PCs I can only guide but not cure these issues. That is, maybe Windows has reached its end.

That is, think of average folk that are confronted with this.
