Question

After replacing Hard Drive with SSD

Jul 21, 2017 6:53AM PDT

1) Installed Windows 10
2) All windows updates
3) Visited Dell website and downloaded ‘two’ driver updates
4) Installed all my programs
5) Ran computer for a couple of days – a few minor issues, mostly resolved
6) Boot time now around 27 seconds – great!
7) Installed Driver Booster Free – wants to update 15 drivers – maybe makes sense since installing Windows 10
Cool Would it be a good idea to run sfc /scannow ?
9) Would it be a good idea to run “Scan Disk” ?
10) Since this is a desktop PC – is it a good idea to Turn on Storage Sense?
11) Since I now have an SSD is the following “even” necessary? Before – I used to do the following to Improve boot times = msconfig / Boot Tab / Advanced / Number of Cores 2 / “check mark” on “Maximum amount of memory…Lowering OS Timeout Values – Boot tab = Locate the Timeout box and replace 30 with 3...Put a check mark on “No GUI boot = apply/OK/restart – Reduce the Boot Menu Time-out – Control Panel - System > Advanced system settings, and, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings. Next to Time to display list of operating systems:, change the value from 30 seconds to 10 seconds and click OK.
12) I understand that its no longer necessary to “defrag” with an SSD. Windows does this automatically. Should I leave it alone or does this need to be turned off?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions

7. Sorry folk.

I don't endorse that or updating drivers that work. If you can't find a broken thing, fixing what works is a bad idea.

9. What is making you think you need to do this? (scan disk)

12. On the SSD systems with w10, Microsoft seems to have this one under control. But why not check it out anyway to be sure it's OFF?

No to Driver Booster

#9 - Just wondering if it should be run since its a "new" installation
#12 - Was "not" off - Reset to "OFF"

Now ready to set a system restore point.

Do agree that an occasional CHKDSK /F/R/X does clear up odd file system and OS issues.

But scandisk? With HDD I would say go right ahead but SSD? I have my reasons to not do that. Your choice at the end of the day.

So no need scandisk with SSD. And Check Disk if I 'ever' feel the need.

Thanks again
