after reinstalling w xp boots and ask to select OS

by Ohio bob / September 18, 2004 7:51 AM PDT

After messing my computer up trying to remove some spyware, I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows xp. Now when I turn the computer on it boots to a screen asking me to select the operating system. 2 choices and both are windows xp home. I can select either and windows then opens normally. I do see in system comfigation utility under boot.ini that I have partition 1 windows xp and partition 2 windows xp. No internet connection yet, no anti virus software yet either..still waiting for sp2 disk to install that before I move back on the net.

There are deep discussions here about how to edit BOOT.INI and a google.com on BOOT.INI tells all.

Try the Virus and Security Forum and ask "How do I avoid Spyware?"

Free firewalls and antivirus can be had too so... you can use the machine again.

Bob,
Thanks for the reply. In trying to find the answer in other threads I have found info for editing boot.ini. My question now is..is that what I need to do? Should there be two partitions both with windows xp?

Here's what I would have to do first. I would want to know what the goal is. Remember that you can't move XP from one partition to another, so most will want the OS on the first or C drive. If that is the BUM version that doesn't work, then I leave the BOOT.INI alone and start repair efforts.

Some clean off C: drive and ... end up with a fresh new install.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
