After dailup, open status: receiving data, how to stop it?

Nov 23, 2007 12:03AM PST

After successful dailup, the connection is slow as there is data being downloaded (check at dailup status dialog box). How to discover which application is responsible for the download, which decreases the connection speed drastically!

Thank you.

Could be anything

Your post offers little by way of clues, eg what Operating System, what computer, what software you have installed and running, etc.

Here are one or two things to go on with;

1] If this is a Windows computer, check if Windows Updates are being downloaded. There should be a Windows Update icon in the System Tray, near the clock.

2] Are you running P2P software like Limewire, Morpheus, BitTorrent etc? If so, perhaps they are connecting up automatically. The System tray should have an icon.

Auo updates are off / no p2p

Mark,

I use Win XP and Firefox, both apps the auto update is off. I do use peer2peer like eDongkey and the Win XP firewall is on.

I am looking for a tool that can monitor which app is responsible for the download. Or is hhere another solution?

I would check that eDonkey

which is a P2P program.

These things tend to work behind the scenes whenever a network is located. Have a look at your Task Manager, (right click the Taskbar, select Properties), and see what is running under the Application and Processes tabs.

No P2P, taskmgr: which program?
Nov 25, 2007 10:20AM PST

Hi all,

Sorry typing error, I do -not- use a P2P application.
I know about the tast manager, but do not know which program is responsible for the download and I cannot just terminate some running apps.

OK.

So, no hidden P2P transfers.

How long does this dial-up network icon flash for when you first connect to your ISP?

If you hover the mouse over the icon it should display a note about how many bits or bytes are being transferred. Does yours do that? If you move the mouse away then back again, do the figures change?

Try this: In the Task Manager again, click the Networking tab. Is there any communication happening? And what about the Users tab? Any users listed?

It might be that this is normal. When you connect up to your ISP they might be sending and receiving traffic about your connection, and eventually the data transfer will stop.

Er.....

Of course, that was what I meant. Right click the Taskbar, select Task manager. Devil

mostly on - 40 kb/s

I am now at the office enjoying ADSL. But so far I remember the downloadspeed is 40 kb/s. The icon is on almost permanently, sometimes off then on.

Could be your antivirus?

After I dial-up my connection is slow, I believe it's my NAV live update running. I've checked the icon for Norton and tried to run the live up date myself but it's already running. It does not show up on the task manager processes either.

After it's done, then I have my computer back.
