after boot it takes several miutes to reach internet

Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 3,All updates current, Dell Dimension 8300, Comcast Broadband Internet, McAfee Security Center furnished by Comcast, Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 current and it makes no difference which I use, Defrag and checkDisk and disk cleanup done as scheduled.
After the initial boot process it takes several minutes to get on the internet. Once there, everything is fast as usual.
I do not know when this slow problem started and what I did at the time that could have caused it.
Any ideas would be appreciated
