Resolved Question

Adware: Can't Uninstall

Dec 19, 2011 11:41AM PST

Downloaded
and Installed a Coupon program that Spybot determined was
Adware. I used Revo Uninstaller but the program's uninstall file
is corrupt and doesn't work, Revo acts as if it worked,
i.e. when I hit next it does its search and it finds about 12
entries for the program. How can I uninstall this adware? Spybot
& Super AntiSpyware find it MBAM doesn't.

If I delete, using Revo, all the files it lists, would that do
it? Or let Spybot handle it?

Apparently you can't download coupons without this program but I
don't want it installed on my computer all the time.

If all this is true we are left with the old MANUAL UNINSTAL

I know it is asking a lot of owners today but when the removers and uninstallers fail we go back to the days of 1995 where we were manually uninstalling apps.

There are no guides on this because none are correct for all applications. But the gist of the work is simple.

1. Delete the folder that holds the app.
2. Delete shortcuts to the app.
3. Use tools like AUTORUNS and HIJACKTHIS to find remnants and delete those.

Usually that's enough to kill an app off.

OK

Thanks Bob, I will try that if nothing else can work. For guys who are just point & click it can be a little scary I've heard so many warnings about anything to do with Registry etc and these adware programs do end up in registry, but what you say makes a lot of sense.

Glad it made a little sense.

I tried to avoid a swamp ride through the registry. Most don't want to do that which is why I left it at the usual 3 areas to manually remove something.

Answer
Coupon program issue
Dec 19, 2011 11:02PM PST

A friend's wife had a VERY similar issue on a laptop running Win Vista and it was a little frustrating. What I finally did seemed odd to me but did the trick. I did a simple system back restore (to a few days prior to the incident) and then ran Malwarebytes and away this thing went, sounds strange but it that case it worked.

Good Idea but...

The only System Restore I have is way beyond the time I first installed this so it would still be there. That's what I get for cleaning out the old System Restore points, otherwise I think you had a good idea there.
