Question

Advice on what to do regarding laptop screen failure

Sep 10, 2015 11:59PM PDT

Firstly, it wasn't listed, but the laptop is a N55S series. I have never had problems with it till recently, and have babied this thing since I've had it, so can't imagine why this problem has started. Nor do I have any clue what to do.>
>Recently the computer screen has started to flicker, sometimes white and back to the screen, sometimes a variety of colors, sometimes black with a flickering vertical line to the left of the screen, and then sometimes altogether seems to shut off while being on still - like a back-lit screen I can do nothing with.>
>This even happens if it is plugged in via a VGA cable. Thankfully, the computer seems to work fine when connected via an HDMI (which the computer has been connected to for the majority of its life/use), and is where I am doing this now. >
>I would love some advice on what to do and how to go about fixing this. I am not inept at fixing things, but fear to full around with opening the laptop till I get a little more understanding of what is going on and the direction to take from those more experienced.

In the video, happens around the 15 sec mark

Replacing the motherboard should solve this hardware issue. But it's quite expensive.

As we would have to dive into laptop design...

The onboard video is rarely based on HDMI but an older work of VGA. If we had a hour to go over a schematic well we would but the symptom is that of a failure in the video area of the motherboard. HDMI is another path so you're lucky that works for now.

It sounds like a motherboard failure.

With both LCD and VGA failing, that points me to a failed motherboard as well. Get estimates.
